This is how advanced railway signalling and train control systems safely increase the rail network capacity. Capacity is a key consideration in railway signalling, and there are two main approaches used: fixed block and moving block signalling. Fixed block signalling divides the track into sections, and trains are not allowed to enter a section until it is clear. Moving block signalling, on the other hand, uses communications between the train and the signalling system to calculate a safe distance to the next train, allowing for more efficient use of track capacity. The DOT leading the civilian GNSS effort and other agencies are watching those trials. The US Government realizes that resiliency is needed and has published EO 13905. The USG also noted that China and Russia both have terrestrial timing networks, and Russia has threatened to shoot down GPS satellites. What happens if you rely on incorrect time from a spoofed GNSS signal and others have accurate time? How do you explain that to regulators, customers, and the press?

Excited to share our latest publication in IEEE Access on Real-Time Railway Traffic Management! Our paper addresses the challenges of adjusting train timetables during perturbations to minimize delays and ensure seamless passenger connections. Abstract: This paper addresses the real-time Railway Traffic Management Problem (rtRTMP), which involves adjusting train timetables during perturbations. Perturbations in railway networks often lead to significant delays, necessitating strategies to minimize their propagation. An important objective of traffic management is to facilitate passenger transfers through connecting trains, which may become difficult when traffic is disturbed. Pursuing this objective, the paper focuses on mitigating train delays by reducing connection times during transfers without compromising connections. To achieve this, we extend an existing Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation for the rtRTMP by introducing two alternative enhancements. Moreover, we pursue the same delay mitigation by extending an Ant Colony Optimization algorithm for the Train Routing Selection Problem (TRSP): this problem reduces the number of alternative routes to be considered for trains, making rtRTMP instances tractable. We assess the efficiency of the proposed enhancements in reducing the total train delay while preserving passenger connections in multiple instances representing traffic in the Lille-Flandres station control area, located in the north of France. The results demonstrate that the integration of these enhancements, in both the TRSP and the rtRTMP, results in a significant reduction in delay propagation. Our Research and Development (R&D) Team continue to excel in the provision of cost-effective preventative technologies to ensure networks and critical rail infrastructure remains safe and functional. RESEARCH - The research work behind this device was prompted by the damage caused to safety-critical railway infrastructure, such as signalling points, insulated rail joints, tracks, bogies, and wheels, due to horizontal movement within the track infrastructure. This movement is often caused by ballast wear over time, and when left unrepaired, it causes significant wear on the above-bearer infrastructure, which relies on a stable base. MEASURE - To measure tiny incremental movement, a device is mounted at three different points on a car set. This ensures that the same reading, when detected, is verified and consistent across the length of the train set. These devices are calibrated to pick up baseline variations used to identify slack in the infrastructure and alert the train controller and maintenance team of its severity ALERTS - Due to the calibration options, alerts can be set up to lead the decision-making process to respond depending on the severity of the situation. The device can be set up to communicate with a centralized controller via GSM, satellite or fibre systems, as well as integrated with onboard train systems.
