Welcoming Caroline Hepworth our new Senior Marketing Manager for TradePoint. Caroline comes to us from the manufacturing industry where she spent the last 6 years being responsible for global marketing. While this is Caroline's first role in retail she brings with her a well-rounded perspective and commercial awareness to help continue to move TradePoint forward. Here she is telling us about her move across to B&Q, and some exciting ambitions for the future. “I joined the B&Q team in October of last year, so still fresh to the business. My career has gained me over 20 Years of marketing experience, spanning various industries, from Leisure and Tourism to manufacturing, education and even some time spent working for marketing agencies. For the previous six years I have had a couple of roles working in the manufacturing industry (American-based companies with a global presence), having responsibility for global marketing - from launching new products or creating brands in different markets – it’s been a varied career to date. There were two factors that motivated me to enter the DIY industry. For years, B&Q has had a reputation for being a ‘people’ led business. I have always admired their focus on flexible working, drive for equality and diversity and the sheer size of the business meant a bigger scope for the career opportunities I was looking for. I also wanted to learn something new. Each role I have taken has been in a new industry for me and I believe that’s made me a well-rounded marketer. Having never worked in the retail sector before, I knew I would relish the challenge and unlock a whole new area of knowledge for me. Even though the industries I have worked in have been very diverse - the challenges those businesses face and their marketing objectives have been very similar. Amanda Baltazar for Marketing Dive: Puttshack tees up quirky spokesperson to highlight high-tech mini-golf. Miniature golf and entertainment chain Puttshack has teed up a U.S. growth plan that relies in part on humorous marketing to help explain its high-tech offerings and woo customers to new locations. Founded in the U.K., where it has four locations, Puttshack opened its first U.S. location in April 2021 and recently cut the ribbon on its 14th venue here, including six that opened in 2023 and three so far this year. After originally setting a goal of 25 sites by 2025, the chain now expects to exceed that. While miniature golf took a hit during the pandemic shutdown, the sector is rebounding. Competition in the space is high, with Topgolf, Puttery and PopStroke among the other chains courting consumers. To differentiate itself and help drive growth, Puttshack is spotlighting its use of technology, including through a recent marketing campaign featuring new brand spokesperson Ace Puttman, the ersatz founder of the company, who extols the chain’s innovations in an over-the-top manner. “There are many competitors in the space so we needed to be different,” said Susan Walmesley, chief marketing officer and chief operating officer at Puttshack. “We wanted it to be an infomercial and wanted someone to explain it in a fun and quirky way.” The recent “Technically, The Best” campaign features six video shorts in which Ace Puttman describes different aspects of the Puttshack experience, including unique elements such as its Trackaball technology — the ball keeps score; no need for the players to do so — and its Supertube. Each video is part educational, part entertainment as Puttman informs and amuses his audience. The campaign aired over the course of a month on social media channels and on billboards. For this week's case study for the Marketing, PR, and Branding class, we were tasked to research a brand that cleverly and clearly defined itself apart from the competition. As a musician, I’ve always found exciting artist Taylor Swift and how she stood out aside from the competition, also known as other Hollywood singers and celebrities. Taylor embarked on her worldwide stadium tour called “The Eras Tour,” where she took her fandom through her albums by making each album segment conceptually different. The show became a hit immediately, and websites crashed when fans attempted to get tickets. It impacted local economies with employment, tourism, and merchandising. This topic is attractive due to its impact and success. As a musician, I admire Taylor for turning this storytelling medium that continues to engage with audiences globally. The most important aspect of marketing herself is the relatability aspect, the constant force that unites Taylor and her fandom. The emotional aspect Taylor promises audiences of each show is nostalgia throughout the three-hour performance. What connected with audiences is how she’s developed different ideas and concepts throughout the various eras of her career that have impacted people increasingly in her career. Connection with the audience is the most critical aspect of marketing. For every show, people pay to have this surreal experience because even though they know they will see their idol, they also get surprise songs, concepts, and albums now and then. This keeps the engagement ongoing, so fans come back more than once because they want to be present when something unexpected is going to happen. Ticket Sales were an essential aspect of Taylor's team's marketing move. By only announcing American dates first, international fans decided to travel to the first dates before knowing that Taylor would play concerts in their hometowns. Stryve Marketing adds, “Why? Well, people want what they can’t have. When something seems limited, it automatically becomes more desirable.” Social Media also played a big part in the show’s success. By posting pictures, videos, and announcements to Taylor’s Instagram page, Taylor kept the audience engaged, but the audience's posts really made an impact. They were the real marketing team of this whole operation. By uploading their content of the night and how much fun they had, people from all parts of the world wanted to go even more. Businesses should be able to recognize what audiences are connecting with and what they should continue to push for to create a successful brand. They should care more about the audiences and give them exactly what they want while keeping surprises. Developing honest experiences or products that portray nostalgia and constantly developing innovative ideas can ensure a company’s success. Miami Marketing Off-Site ? On Monday I was overpacking for this trip. And now you see three photos of me wearing the exact same thing. Awkwardddd… ?? (I swear these photos were taken on the same day.) We just wrapped up our 2024 Marketing Team off-site, and it was a resounding success. Some of the highlights: ? Meeting various local Glide customers at a rooftop mixer we hosted. ?? Cant express how valuable it is for marketing to get face time with customers. We referenced these conversations for the remainder of our working sessions. I also had the absolute pleasure of finally meeting Jesus Vargas , founder of LowCode Agency, one of the premiere agency partners at Glide (bottom left pic). The man’s a legend. ???? ? Listening to presentations IRL from Wren Noble on tone and voice, Rhys Hanak on product positioning, David J. Park on go-to-market strategy, and Brett Haralson on agency partnership expansion. ?? I also presented on top of funnel acquisition and hosted a brainstorm session to collect big ideas that the team could rally behind. These presentations and working sessions would not have been possible on zoom. Getting everyone in a room to accomplish this was very impactful. It hits different. ? Going for dinner and drinks, and doing activities with the team. ?? One thing that’s difficult to measure is the trust and connection that forms from just hanging out with your colleagues. We’ve all heard terms like “team building” - but I don’t think that does it justice. It’s deeper than that. Its bond building. And those bonds translate into great friendships and even better outcomes at work. We had a few major “aha” moments while drinking a beer (amirite Tom Parkes ?) ???? I have a lot of learnings to share that came out of this off site, but I’ll save them. I was planning on telling a story here each day, but frankly the days were so busy there was no time! How do you explain marketing? If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying ‘Circus Coming to the Showground Saturday’ -? that’s advertising. If you put that sign on the back of an elephant and walk it into town - that’s promotion. If the elephant walks through the mayor’s flower bed and the local newspaper writes a story about it - that’s publicity. And if you get the mayor to laugh about it - that’s public relations. If you show them the different entertainment, explain how much fun they’ll have spending money at the booths, and answer their questions - that’s sales. Ever wondered what marketing really is? Picture this. You're in a quaint town and the circus is rolling in on Saturday. You decide to paint a vibrant sign announcing its arrival - that's pure advertising. Now, imagine sticking that sign on the back of a mammoth elephant, parading it around the town square - that's promotion in action. Suddenly, the elephant takes a detour through the mayor's precious flower bed, landing a spot in the local newspaper's headline - that's a lesson in publicity. Somehow, you manage to get the mayor chuckling about the mishap - congratulations, you've just aced public relations. Then you enthrall the townsfolk with tales of thrilling entertainment and the promise of unforgettable memories, all while answering their queries - voila, you're doing sales. And the mastermind behind orchestrating all these elements? That, my friends, is the craft of marketing. How do you paint your own picture of marketing? Let's hear your stories! If you planned the whole thing - that’s marketing.

Marketing PR Planning. You need to research how much each activity costs, how long it will take and when the most effective time is to carry it out. Based on the information, you can draw up your marketing plan, listing each action and its timing (e.g. send out press release, 6 weeks before event) as well as points in the timeline when you measure the success of your activities so far and review your activities. It is essential to collaborate with venues, as you want to pool resources and activities rather than double up. It's a good idea to have a conversation about your event with the marketing department at each venue right at the beginning, to ensure they know what the project is about and that they have all material they would like/need for their purposes. For example, some venues, especially libraries are keen on posters, while others no longer use printed material at all, focussing on-line instead. If you stay in touch with the marketing departments throughout, you will be able to find out how well each event is selling and which venue, if any, might need some support. Your marketing activities will depend on how much money you have available, how much time you are able to invest, and what standard you are happy with. If you have a more generous amount for marketing within your budget you could look to create a microsite for your project. This is a great way to feature all information about your project in one easily accessible place. You could also consider a podcast or a video about the project, featuring soundbites from people involved in the project, images, etc.
