By the end of this year, the youngest of the Baby Boomers will have turned 60, a milestone accompanied by an increase in adult children caring for their aging parents. More than half of Americans in their 40s are now ‘sandwiched’ between an aging parent and their own children— a context that has led to this generational cohort being dubbed the “sandwich generation.” In an op-ed for amNY, RiverSpring’s very own senior member advocate Mariam Sukiasyan says that for those in the ‘sandwich generation’ who are feeling squeezed, the expertise and support of a patient advocate to help navigate the bureaucracy and complicate care system can make all the difference. Patient advocacy is a central component of our mission. Read the full opinion piece:?https://lnkd.in/e9GUVrKb

National Family Caregivers Month was a pivotal time for building common ground in support of family caregivers. From our 2nd Annual Caregiver Nation Summit that united 600 leaders across aging, disability, and patient advocacy to releasing new data on health system gaps for family caregivers, we maximized the month to spotlight the critical changes needed to value care. Key highlights include: ?? Our second Caregiver Nation Advocacy day, where 100 advocates educated policymakers on the vital role of the Older Americans Act in supporting family caregivers. ?? Bipartisan resolutions in the House and Senate highlighting the vital role family caregivers play in society. ?? The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services took a significant step forward by expanding support for family caregiver training services through new billing codes in the 2025 Physician Fee Schedule ?? Our new research on transplant caregivers revealed critical gaps and opportunities for improving caregiver support in transplant centers nationwide Check out our National Family Caregivers Month wrap up in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/ebMVEAth #Caregiving #FamilyCaregivers #PolicyChange #CaregiverNation #Medicare #OlderAmericansAct #Healthcare

?? What a council session! ?? Tender's 2nd Care Council sparked some deep conversations on the nuances of caregiving, underscoring the distinct needs of caregivers and their families and how society and employers must help us meet the challenge. A big shoutout to Susan Golden and Crystal Hudson for their contributions to the dialogue and Miriam Warren for hosting! This meetup left us with more than just thoughts—it left us with a call to action for caregivers everywhere! **Tender’s 2nd Care Council** “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” -Helen Keller. Last week, at Yelp we convened our 2nd Tender Care Council. And while I would have said it was impossible to beat our first, this was an even more vibrant exchange of ideas around family caregivers, their roles and responsibilities, and just as importantly - how employers and society play an important role in bringing the spotlight to the largely unseen work of 54 million people in the U.S. as they pitch in to help their aging family members. Spearheaded by thought leaders like Stanford dciX Director Susan Golden, a beacon of innovation in caregiving, NY City Council Member Crystal Hudson, an absolute changemaker for aging populations in NYC and MSNBC Anchor Richard Lui, a storyteller of the first order. This time around, we unearthed 3 truths: 1) Family caregiving is a mosaic of complex needs requiring holistic solutions and a central marketplace to move the needle and create lasting change. 2) Too often we bundle up family caregiving in the same conversation as aging. They are connected but separate, and services and access for the elderly might not always benefit family caregivers (often younger) equally. 3) A robust community and public / private systemic support are the bedrock of effective caregiving. Let's see more of it! A heartfelt thank you to Miriam Warren for hosting us at Yelp and to our guest speakers for their enlightening perspectives, and to each council participant for their dedication to redefining family caregiving. Together, we're building pathways to a future where caregiving is not just a responsibility but a shared journey. Budget cuts in Indiana mean parent caregivers lose a program they need and endure a bureaucratic nightmare transitioning to a different program that barely helps. From an article that covered the meeting: "Six moms of medically complex children pressured Gov. Eric Holcomb yesterday to reform his administration’s approach to transitioning families from attendant care to another caregiving program in a private Monday meeting at the Statehouse. These parent caregivers represented Indiana Families United 4 Care, a coalition formed four months ago after the state announced the change in benefits for parents caregivers." I look at this photo of five of the six parent caregivers who met with the governor yesterday and wonder: Where is the national caregiving organization that advocates on behalf of family caregivers? What's happening in Indiana isn't just going to happen in Indiana. Changes in benefits and programs that serve family caregivers will be an ongoing challenge. Why isn't this issue a priority for our national caregiving organization that advocates for family caregivers? Why isn't our national caregiver organization that advocates for family caregivers working with these parent caregivers, offering resources and support in order to create a strategic plan that can be implemented when family caregivers in other states experience a similar challenge? We can help and support these parent caregivers. We can sign the petition they've created to show our support. We can share their stories. We can make sure they know we understand how hard it is to fight for benefits while also providing 24/7 care to a child with complex care needs. We also can take a hard look at how we organize nationally when a state-specific struggle makes a difficult caregiving experience even worse. #caregiving #caregivingsupport #advocacy

Being a family caregiver is no small task. While we love to focus on our patients, caregiving is a two-way relationship between the caregiver and the person receiving care. Did you know that 66% of caregivers are caring for a senior with a health problem or disability? Having shared the shoes of millions across the world as a family caregiver, I will say that it can be an extremely emotionally fulfilling experience. It can also be very challenging. Approximately 67% of family caregivers have difficulty balancing their jobs with caregiving duties. Not to mention, caregiver burnout is real! While we celebrate the efforts of family caregivers, it is important for us to spread awareness on the issues that family caregivers may face and educate our community on ways that these amazing humans may receive our support! Whether it’s the VA, Alzheimer’s Association, AARP, or even Facebook; there are resources and support groups for our family caregivers in the community. What are some ways that we can increase support for family caregivers?
Today is National Family Caregiver Day! The Alliance is excited to join this longstanding day of celebration as National Care at Home Month celebrates and supports paid and unpaid caregivers, building on the existing work of National Family Caregivers Month by the Caregiver Action Network, among others. National Family Caregivers Month – celebrated each November — is a time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country. Celebrating family caregivers enables all of us to: ? Raise awareness of family caregiver issues ? Celebrate the efforts of family caregivers ? Educate family caregivers about self-identification ? Increase support for family caregivers ? Reduce feelings of isolation Thank you to the many millions of caregivers nationwide who make professional home care possible. The Alliance will increase its focus on advocacy on behalf of paid and unpaid caregivers in the months and years ahead! #StrongerTogether #NationalFamilyCaregiversMonth?

Truly impressive, Arizona! Breaking news: The Arizona Family Caregivers Action Plan has just been launched! “There are more than 800,000 family caregivers in Arizona providing critical care for loved ones while often receiving little support. The Arizona Family Caregivers Action Plan aims to create a statewide environment where caregivers are equipped with the resources, training, and advocacy they need from day No. 1,” shares Kathrine Steele-Watson, executive director of the Arizona Caregiver Coalition. It focuses on: 1. Access to Services 2. Advocacy & Outreach 3. Education We at Professionals Who Care suggest adding to “Advocacy and Outreach” a plan to help the workplace become more inclusive for caregivers. A welcoming, supportive, and flexible workplace has been proven to be a significant factor in caregiver outcomes. And the better the caregivers are doing, the better the ones who are receiving the care are doing. We at PWC love the concept of providing resources from day one. Often, caregiving begins with a crisis or tragedy, and all energy is on navigating the loss and chaos. Some better-funded disabilities, illnesses, injuries, or aging diseases provide resources, while those affected by lower-supported issues can face the challenges alone. For all, information can slowly trickle in by word-of-mouth, compassionate health providers, insightful nonprofits, and long hours of research. Caregivers often have little capacity to get it wrong, but fewer resources to get it right. Providing supports from day one can improve the entire trajectory of the caregiver experience. The work of those who put this together will make a significant difference: improved outcomes, reduced stress, fewer misdirects and dead-ends, less confusion. And better health for all Arizonians. We are fans! #inclusivity #EmployedCaregivers #ArizonaHealth #Caregiving #Caregivers #CommunitySupport #OutOfTheShadows #ItTakesAVillage https://lnkd.in/eKPVSg6J

AARP is to be commended for pulling the Creative Coalition together to amplify the voices of the nation's family caregivers. Every voice will be needed, and it is important for everyone to know that the movement to support all family caregivers, not just of older adults, but caregivers of children and adults with disabilities and chronic conditions, has been elevated at the national, state and local levels by the National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers (https://lnkd.in/ebzYm4P5) from the Administration for Community Living. And exciting things are happening. In addition to AARP and my own organization, the ARCH National Respite Coalition, the National Alliance for Caregiving, the Family Caregiver Alliance / National Center on Caregiving, the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers, USAging, the American Association of Caregiving Youth (AACY), Caring Across Generations, The John A. Hartford Foundation, Health Foundation for Western and Central New York, and countless others, are working together to implement the goals and objectives of the National Strategy. Groundbreaking Executive Actions from the Biden/Harris Administration that were not mentioned in this video are already making caregiving easier for millions and addressing the crisis in care resulting from the direct care worker shortage. Learn more about the Act on RAISE and Caregiver Nation campaigns being led by the National Alliance for Caregiving (https://lnkd.in/efsghBgC). Learn more about the #respite policies and programs that give caregivers a break from their ongoing caregiving responsibilities that are being advanced by the ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center and its National Respite Coalition, the Alzheimer's Association?, and State Respite and Caregiving Coalitions across the country (archrespite.org). There is still so much more that needs to be done. It is going to take a village, a state, a national movement, all of us, to advance supports for the growing number of family caregivers. There is great uncertainty now about what the future policy landscape will be, but one thing is certain, all of us will be affected by caregiving, and all of us are needed now to make our voices heard.
