Did you know? The General Sherman Tree is a massive giant sequoia in the Sequoia National Park — it is the world’s largest living tree! It’s taller than 275 feet, this awe-inspiring tree has a circumference of about 102 feet at its base and it is thought to be more than 2,200 years old. The largest is General Sherman, not by height but by volume, and by sheer size and incredible age. Trees like General Sherman are more than just nature teachers; they teach us about history and our connection to that which has come before us. This amazing tree is a reminder to all of us of the need to protect our natural world, with endless inspiration and curiosity for nature lovers and for life long learners. #FridayFunFact #EducationMatters #HPLS #HallPassLearningSolutions #NatureFacts #GeneralSherman #SequoiaNationalPark #NatureEducation #TreeFacts #FunFactFriday #ExploreNature #OutdoorLearning #TreeOfLife #LivingHistory #WorldsLargestTree #GiantSequoia #EducationalPosts #LearningIsFun #InspireCuriosity #FunFacts #SequoiaTree #ExploreCalifornia #EnvironmentAwareness #NaturalWonders #LearningJourney

This comic strip represents all that is wrong with schools. Children should be at the heart of their own educational journey, guiding their learning paths with their passions and interests. Yet, often, the rigid structures of schooling don't cater to this personalized exploration. If a child's love for reading about dinosaurs could be the gateway to a world of learning, why not harness that enthusiasm across subjects? Let's advocate for a system that adapts to the learner, not the other way around. #ChildCenteredLearning #EducationSystem #InnovativeTeaching #PassionBasedLearning

?? New on YouTube: 'The Park Explorers' Read-Aloud ???? Read by Ava Hayles Looking for a fun and educational way to support your child's learning? 'The Park Explorers' storybook read-aloud is perfect for introducing young children to the wonders of plants while building those all-important literacy skills. ?? Why Start Young? The earlier children develop strong reading and language skills, the better they do across all subjects, especially science. Research from the EEF shows that a child's ability to read and understand text is one of the best indicators of their success in science later on. By combining stories with science, we're not just teaching them about plants—we're laying the foundation for future learning and curiosity. ?? What Ofsted Says Ofsted highlights that learning scientific vocabulary early on is crucial. It helps children access the curriculum and succeed as they grow. By using engaging stories like 'The Park Explorers,' we can make science fun and accessible right from the start. ?? Check out the video and give your child a head start on their learning journey! #KS1Science #ReadingInScience #Homeschooling #LiteracyMatters #EarlyLearning

The latest news from RTPI
ROGER TORY PETERSON INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES SCHOLARS-IN-RESIDENCE Canisius University Faculty to Expand Spark Bird Project Jamestown, NY – March 5, 2024 – The Roger Tory Peterson Institute proudly announces the naming of Dr. Jennifer Lodi-Smith and Janet McNally, professors at Canisius University, as the inaugural RTPI Scholars-in-Residence. As Scholars-in-Residence, Lodi-Smith and McNally will expand the focus of The Spark Bird Project to include the perspective of artists. The Spark Bird Project (https://lnkd.in/e63nEPnW) is designed to gather and share the stories of people’s passion for birds while gaining scientific insights into a critical missing piece in the ecology of birds: birders themselves. “When Roger Tory Peterson was 11 years old, he had an unexpectedly up-close encounter with a northern flicker,” said Arthur Pearson, CEO of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. “That ‘spark bird’ experience changed his life, setting him on a course to becoming the father of the modern field guide and international ambassador for birds.” In the United States, 45 million people identify themselves as birdwatchers. Many if not most of them had a similar “spark bird” experience – some encounter with a particular bird that transformed them into life-long lovers of birds. Along the way many of them also were sparked and supported by field guides like Peterson’s as well as specific individuals and their local community birding groups. “As a Professor of Psychology,” Lodi-Smith shared, “I was struck by the spark bird story of Peterson and so many other birders, but dismayed that there is scant academic scholarship on this topic. While we are doing a great job of understanding birds, we know very little about birders themselves. The Spark Bird Project aims to better understand who birders are and who potential birders may be – insights which can help shape how organizations such as RTPI engage more people in the beauty and wonder of birds.” As part of the project, Lodi-Smith and McNally will host a series of podcasts with birders, environmentalists, educators, and artists, to share and discuss their spark bird experiences. “Roger Tory Peterson is one of countless artists whose future careers were fueled by a spark bird experience,” Pearson added. “As a museum dedicated to nurturing the next generation of nature artists, RTPI is particularly looking forward to learning more about the artist perspective on spark birds – to further inform our mission, strategy and goals.” *???*???* Read the full press release: https://conta.cc/49I157s

Want to dive into project-based learning but unsure where to start? Here are three ideas to get you started: ?? Theme Projects: Choose a theme that interests your students—like dinosaurs or space—and explore it through art, stories, and play. ?? Observation Journals: Encourage children to observe something (like plant growth or weather changes) and document their findings with drawings or simple notes. ?? Community Helpers: Create projects around community members, such as firefighters or librarians, and invite guests to speak or provide materials for exploration. Experience the joy of learning by doing! How will you implement these ideas? #inclusionmatters #projectbasedlearning #earlychildhoodeducation #ECEeducators #MNelc
