From industry and recreation to cultural significance for Indigenous people, salmon have deep importance in our state. And because they spend time in marine environments in the ocean as well as fresh water, there’s a unique and critical link between the ocean environment and our rivers in the Central Valley. Today, however, salmon are in serious trouble. River Partners is re-engineering historic side channels and floodplain rearing habitats at eight sites along a 130-mile stretch of the Sacramento River from Redding in the north to south of Colusa. Partnering with state and federal agencies, the work is challenging and tedious—but something as vital and precious as salmon surely deserves it. https://lnkd.in/gNVVfMni

GREAT NEWS: The Great Salt Lake Watershed Enhancement Trust released this week its five-year strategy to secure more water for the lake, which hit historic lows just a few years ago. The five-year plan highlights key objectives for the trust, which was created with $40 million in taxpayer money with the objective of getting more water flowing into the lake, a resource critical for Utah’s wildlife, industry and continued growth. ?? ?? ?? Great news for Oregon rivers! The?@NOAAFisheries?Coastal Resilience Fund just awarded $8.1 million to?@WildSalmonCenter?for 11?#CoastCohoPartnership?projects in the Nehalem, Siletz, Siuslaw, Coos, and Coquille watersheds. All will improve life for threatened Oregon Coast coho salmon runs. Together, they'll: -Restore 494 acres of tidal wetland habitat; -Improve 145.5 acres of instream, non-tidal wetland and/or off-channel habitat; -Enhance 86.5 acres of riparian habitat, including 1.3 miles of livestock exclusion fencing; and -Reconnect 9.3 miles of streams for salmon. And more great news! NOAA's award will also support the expansion of the?#CoastCohoPartnership's work into the South Umpqua, Alsea, and Sixes watersheds. We can't wait to get to work for wild fish and the people who love them. (Photo: Drift Creek, Siletz watershed. Credit: David Herasimtschuk.)

How does restoring native brook trout in West Virginia help save the Bay? ?? Well, improving water quality where the Potomac begins also helps boost water quality downstream all the way to where it empties into the Chesapeake Bay. The Potomac is the second-largest tributary of the Bay and an important source of fresh water. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/en4du7-x

Word keeps spreading about the new state park at River Partners’ former Dos Rios Ranch Preserve near Modesto. On NPR's “All Things Considered” show, host Ailsa Chang shared that, “…stepping into this park is like stepping into a time machine, where the land has been restored to a semblance of what it used to look like centuries ago…” The 1,600-acre Dos Rios is the largest public-private floodplain restoration project in California history, has been dubbed a "park of the future," and delivers critical wins for the state's environment and communities. Those benefits include improved flood safety for vulnerable communities, increased water supply for farms and households, more habitat for struggling wildlife, natural carbon capture, and increased public health through new outdoor-recreation opportunities. "We need thousands more acres just like this. Not just not for just water, not for habitat, but for the people of the land, for the people that were here long before anybody else." - Austin Stevenot, Northern Sierra Mewuk, River Partners San Joaquin Valley Field Manager https://lnkd.in/gUu6U272

In Nuu-chah-nulth territory on Vancouver Island’s west coast, ha’wiih (hereditary leaders) of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation are designating Salmon Parks to restore key watersheds central to salmon spawning. ?????? The management plans for these Salmon Parks include actions to protect and regenerate surrounding forests. And healthy forests support healthy rivers — with shade-cooled waters and a variety of habitats that allow fish to rest, spawn and hide from predators. Recent work by Mowachaht/Muchalaht Nation shows that 90 percent of salmon productivity in the region will benefit from protecting a small fraction of local watersheds. This year, we worked in partnership with the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation to advance their protection goals. Our projects included an economic cost-benefit analysis and a carbon feasibility study that will provide critical data to support Indigenous-led management plans. While this proposed Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) rule focuses on lake trout and cisco in Lake Superior, it highlights challenges that affect all the Great Lakes, including Lake Michigan. Changing environmental conditions and the need for adaptive management are critical for sustaining healthy fish populations and resilient ecosystems. We’re closely watching efforts like these as we work to protect Lake Michigan and ensure its resources thrive for future generations.

The San Luis Obispo Creek watershed's upland tributaries flow through a highly urbanized area while and supports many native aquatic species. One is the Central California Coast Steelhead Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) which was listed as threatened by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in 1997 due to loss of critical habitat. NMFS designated the watershed as Core 1 meaning SLO Creek is a high priority for implementing recovery actions for the steelhead. Creek Lands Conservation received a grant from the Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust for the San Luis Obispo Creek Resiliency and Rewilding Plan. The “rewilding” side, in partnership with Stillwater Sciences, focuses on the identification and undertaking of restoration actions that will revive critical habitat within the watershed. Healthy habitat for steelhead includes cold, fast-flowing, and oxygen rich waters, quality gravel, and deep pools with adequate cover for young smolts. In addition, connectivity between coastal streams and the ocean is necessary to encourage anadromy (the migration to and from the ocean). Rewilding efforts will outline where these habitat requirements are lacking in the watershed and prioritize future projects to address these insufficiencies. Restoring the health of local disturbed habitat will both help steelhead return back to their historic range and benefit the rest of the ecosystem, as steelhead presence serves an indication of general watershed health. Salmon Restoration: Putting Humpty Dumpty BackTogether The largest summer chum salmon run since 1975 shows how Tribes are rebuilding both habitat and fish populations, defying odds and obstacles. This is nobody’s idea of easy work. Tribes’ unflagging commitment is one of the main reasons salmon still return to Puget Sound. For Global Ocean Health, that determination is also one of the main reasons why much of our work centers on partnership with Tribes.

????The Pacific Salmon Explorer is a tool created by the Pacific Salmon Foundation that offers detailed, data-driven insights into the status of Pacific salmon and their freshwater habitats throughout British Columbia. This tool presents indicators related to salmon abundance, catch, productivity, and habitat conditions across eight major salmon regions. It is designed to support conservation, management, and recovery efforts for salmon by providing the best available data to the public, including First Nations organizations, governments, and independent experts.
