Please join us in congratulating Southern Utah University for doubling its student population size and reaching record highs in graduation and retention! This major accomplishment is owed to SUU's commitment to high-quality, flexible learning, with a robust online program serving more than 3,500 fully online students. Steve Meredith, SUU's Associate Vice President for Graduate and Online, shared, "The growth in our online campus reflects SUU’s commitment to accessibility, by offering our academic programs in the modality that best fits our students’ needs. #QTNano: Western Oregon University is implementing a new grading system starting fall 2024 to enhance student retention and address issues of academic equity. At the bottom, they face the same problem as we face at the University of S?o Paulo. How to reduce the number of students that drop out the course at the first years. There is not general and easy solution for this problem. At daily basis, I have to deal with students that give up for many reasons. Furthermore, as father, I also understand the another side too. For most cases, we should accept that give up an university course is not a signal of failure, but a signal for big change, which many times is necessary for everyone to find their path in life. Education is not a linear learning curve for everyone. https://lnkd.in/dpa6mvu7

I am excited to announce that I will be running to be president of the American University School of Education Graduate Student Council (GSC) for the 2024-25 academic year. SOE has a total of 7 graduate programs, ranging from international education to a MAT program, and having both online and on-campus formats; furthermore, there is a continued commitment towards equity in all aspects as it relates to education - requiring the necessity of combating racism in all forms. In deciding to run for this position, I pondered the vision of SOE and the importance of "...making a meaningful impact in the field?of?education?through innovative teaching, research, and service." The core values of excellence, diversity and inclusion, collaboration, and innovation will be front of mind if I were to be elected, as these values reflect who we are and how we envision society to be. In stating this, I plan on focusing on bringing more professional capacity to students as well as enhancing SOE's connection to governmental bodies, international organizations, and local organizations involved in education. I also would like to work on building the necessary coherence between programs and for there to be greater cross-collaboration. While the following are some goals I have in mind, they are not final. As with any endeavor, a lot of patience and humbleness are required; furthermore, to listen to all stakeholders and pursue what is best for everyone. All that being said, I hope that you will vote for me beginning this Thursday to ensure that the SOE has a greater local, national, and international impact for generations to come. Even if I were not to be elected, whoever is at the helm I am sure will keep working for the graduate students at SOE. Strategic Goals: 1. Push towards joining the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA), as the programs and resources may be beneficial to the institution and graduate students (particularly the EPL and Ed.D. program) 2. In the pursuit of engaging students in scholarship, ensure that there are more opportunities for students to participate in research with faculty or in student teams 3. Collaborate with organizations in the DC area, particularly as it relates to international education and the local community, and have there be networking and learning opportunities (in-person and virtual) 4. Work with SOE administration to create a funding campaign to have more sustainability through greater external funding, with a particular focus on having more scholarship and PD opportunities available to students (e.g., attending national conferences and/or presenting research) While many of these may not be able to be accomplished in a year, I do hope that it sets the trajectory for SOE to have a greater impact. If anyone has any opinion, my door is open and I am ready to listen. Best, Carlos Gamez

Eastern New Mexico University earned status as a U.S. News and World Report “Best College” because of its excellent standing in the recently published 2025 Best College Rankings. Eastern New Mexico was ranked 46th of 115 in the social mobility category for regional Universities in the West, an improvement of 24 spots from 2024. Social Mobility rankings focus on economically disadvantaged students who are less likely than others to finish college, even when controlling for other characteristics. Universities recognized in this category are more successful than others at advancing social mobility by enrolling and graduating large proportions of disadvantaged students awarded with Pell Grants. Most of these federal grants are awarded to students whose adjusted gross family incomes are under $50,000. “While it is great to be recognized nationally for our work, the ranking in social mobility highlights the importance of regional comprehensive universities like ENMU,” said James Johnston, ENMU Chancellor. “We provide high quality, accessible higher education opportunities to all students with a demonstrated track record of student success. We help change the socio-economic status of many of our students through the life-changing accomplishment of earning a college degree.” Eastern New Mexico University was also ranked as one of the top 50 Public Universities in the West and one of the top 100 Regional Universities in the West. An insightful new post from Debra Bragg on how to scale community college baccalaureates, posted on Community College Daily. ? Debra highlights an important point: that scaling CCBs doesn’t mean “taking students” from universities. States with mature CCB programs already know this, but fear persists in other states as they consider – or resist – authorizing CCBs. ? We are reminded of Valerie Sundby, Ed.D.'s comment at the Community College Baccalaureate Association’s 2024 conference – that CCBs are “living in the gap,” serving a unique set of students who want a bachelor’s degree but might not otherwise have access to it due to cost, time, or geography. Especially in rural spaces, community colleges can often offer the only regional bachelor’s degree option, helping communities retain and nurture their local talent while supporting degree attainment.?With local CCBs, getting a bachelor’s degree doesn’t have to mean leaving home; it doesn’t have to cause “brain drain.”?? ? To that end, CCBs aren’t just about the workforce and economy. CCBs have the ability to enrich local communities in qualitative ways – creating healthier communities, bolstering civic engagement, and allowing residents who want higher education to do it close to home.?Perhaps there is progress to be made in the effort to scale CCBs by sitting in that qualitative space, learning more about how CCBs help create holistically more vibrant communities.

"In this paper we suggest how the current higher education landscape will require further refinement of competing interests. In addition to well documented demographic shifts, two important trends require more disciplined strategy, policy, and operations. The first is the rapid rise of lifelong learning and non-degree credentials. The second is the shift to online study—the overwhelming majority of?lifelong learners, plus 71 percent of graduate and 67 percent of undergraduate students, now study partially or exclusively online."

Before the birth of the United States, Higher Education was already taking root in the American colonies. Nine universities were founded before July 4, 1776: Harvard University (1636), College of William & Mary (1693), Yale University (1701), Princeton University (1746), University of Pennsylvania (1740), Columbia University (1754), Brown University (1764), Rutgers University (1766), and Dartmouth College (1769). These institutions were beacons of knowledge, laying the foundation for what would become a vast and dynamic Higher Education system. ?? These early universities emerged from a desire to cultivate intellectual and moral leadership in the New World. They began as small, elite institutions with a focus on classical education, preparing young men for ministry, law, and government service. Despite the limited resources and challenging conditions of the colonial era, they persevered and thrived, establishing traditions of scholarship and public service that continue to this day. ?? Fast forward to today, and the landscape of Higher Education has transformed dramatically. From those humble beginnings, the United States now boasts over 4,000 degree-granting institutions, serving millions of students from diverse backgrounds. The scope of education has broadened exponentially, encompassing a vast array of disciplines and professional fields. As of July 4th, 2024, Higher Education institutions include public and private universities, community colleges, liberal arts colleges, technical and vocational schools, for-profit colleges, HBCUs, HSIs, TCUs, women's colleges, men's colleges, religiously affiliated colleges, military academies, specialty institutions, online colleges, and research universities. all contribute to a robust and multifaceted educational system. ?? The progress made over the centuries is nothing short of remarkable. The contributions of American universities to innovation, technology, and culture are globally recognized. They are at the forefront of scientific research, artistic creation, and social advancement, driving progress and addressing the complex challenges of our time. ?? Today’s Higher Education leaders deserve heartfelt congratulations for their unwavering commitment to excellence and their dedication to student success. They have carried the torch passed down from those early visionaries, ensuring that education remains a transformative force in society. These leaders champion inclusivity, adaptability, and resilience, preparing students not only for careers but for meaningful, informed lives as citizens. ?? ?? ?? As we celebrate the evolution and American Higher Education, we acknowledge the immense responsibility that comes with it. The future of our nation and the world depends on the continued strength and innovation of our educational institutions. To all who lead, teach, and support in Higher Education, thank you for your invaluable contributions and for lighting the way forward. ????????
