Journalists and media outlets, words matter. Calling the riots in England "protests" misrepresents peaceful protest and demonises legitimate activism. ?? The Right to Peaceful Assembly is protected by law and cannot involve violence. Violence means force likely causing injury, death, or serious property damage. ??? Civil Disobedience and minor disruptions don't equate to violence. Recent UK events clearly cross the line. ?????? Protest rights can be limited; however, the restrictions must be lawful, necessary, and proportionate (ICCPR, Art 21). Peaceful protests, by law, can't advocate for hate or incite violence or be used as propaganda for war. (ICCPR, Art 20). ?? Associating violent disorder with genuine, lawful, non-violent democratic speech undermines our human rights and peaceful protest. ??? Human Rights: Our Common Language Human rights serve as a universal language that transcends cultural and national boundaries, embodying dignity, equality, and justice for all. They form the foundation of freedom, peace, and development, uniting humanity in recognizing every individual's right to live with respect, safety, and opportunity. These rights belong to no single group or ideology but reflect the intrinsic worth of every person, affirming our shared commitment to a more just world. The adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 marked a historic step in recognizing that all people are entitled to life, liberty, and security. This landmark document affirmed that every person, regardless of race, gender, nationality, or religion, is entitled to the same fundamental freedoms and protections. Former UNESCO DG Federico Mayor Zaragoza saw human rights as not merely norms but the essence of our shared humanity, guiding aspirations for a society free from fear and want. He believed that embracing human rights as a common language could foster a global community capable of overcoming adversity and advancing human dignity. His vision aligned with advocating for a culture of peace, where human rights are central to sustainable and equitable development. Similarly, the late UN SG Boutros-Ghali emphasized human rights as a framework for dialogue and diplomacy. He argued that a shared vocabulary of human rights could help resolve conflicts and promote reconciliation, viewing these principles not as abstract ideals but as practical tools for sustainable peace and justice. Human rights empower individuals and communities to voice concerns, confront injustices, and seek redress. They bridge differences, find solutions to complex issues, and promote social cohesion. By invoking universal principles of justice and equity, people can resist oppression and advocate for reform. However, realizing human rights requires constant vigilance. These principles are challenged by authoritarianism, discrimination, conflict, and poverty, underscoring the need for active protection by governments, civil society, and individuals. In times of crisis, Human Rights serve as a moral compass, guiding societies toward humane policies. True progress is measured not just by economic growth but by ensuring that all individuals can enjoy their rights without fear of violence or deprivation. This promise of a fairer world calls for collective effort. Human Rights represent more than legal norms; they embody the values that unite us. They remind us that, despite our differences, we all seek justice, respect, and the opportunity to lead meaningful lives. Embracing human rights as our common language reaffirms our commitment to a world where everyone thrives with dignity and equality, transforming peace from an ideal into a lived reality. This vision, championed by Mayor and Boutros-Ghali, challenges us to make human rights a universal reality for all.
