NMU participated as one of 40 host institutions for the nationwide Amplifying Student Voices (ASV) Convening on Oct. 5. The hybrid event brought together more than 400 student leaders to engage in both virtual and in-person dialogues on the future of belonging, diversity and equity in higher education, and on strategies for fulfilling the promise of an inclusive democracy. “It was important that NMU participate in this national convening because it provided a platform to listen to and engage with student voices directly,” said Shawnrece Butler, NMU assistant vice president for Diversity and Inclusion. “These dialogues empowered students to shape the narrative around inclusive campus environments, offering institutions valuable insights into what students need to feel connected and supported and offering essential information from which to create student-centered policies and practices that genuinely reflect their needs and aspirations.” Read more about this event, here: https://lnkd.in/gGGJktV8 #DEI #Diversity #DiversityAndInclusion #HigherEducation #HigherEd #Change #ChangeLeaders

Embracing Educational Equity: THE Pathway to Greater Access & Opportunity (#8) ? This is the last full week of July, and many schools will begin welcoming back staff and students in the coming weeks. ? As we strive for educational equity, it's important to recognize the significant role advanced courses play in preparing students for higher education. Rigorous academic classes are a foundation for academic excellence, critical thinking, time-management… and the list goes on.?Research consistently shows that students who participate in advanced courses while in high school have higher matriculation rates and college GPAs. Yet, access to advanced courses remains unequal across demographic groups. ? Educators, in a previous post I posed these questions: ·What would it mean for your school culture if you increased access to advanced courses for underserved and underrepresented students? ·How would increasing access at the highest academic levels change mindsets and expectations more broadly within your school? ? As you welcome back staff and students, put culture, mindsets, and expectations at the top of your ‘to do’ list for 2024-25.

Always humbled to be in the presence of folks who equally care about the mission of the work. The mission of students (and families) reaching opportunities and resources that can not only positively route them toward prosperous futures but the trajectory of their families. University of Michigan’s Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) celebrated 15 years of a dedicated mission aligning with systemic work of the university creating pathways for students to reach college success. CEO continues to work as the K-12 Outreach Hub at UMICH. Through the office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion — CEO supports and advances the University of Michigan’s commitment to educational outreach and academic excellence through campus and statewide public engagement service. CEO has delivered direct service to K-12 communities in some of the following ways: * 18 current high school partners * served 65 K-12 schools * 108 U-M graduate college advisors placed across the state of Michigan. * over 50,000 K-12 student interactions with a CEO program * 82 community of practice events * 1386 faculty and staff in communities impacted * 936 U-M faculty and staff impacted * 82 departments served across all 19 U-M schools and colleges * 294 U-M student ambassadors & interns * 719 FREE outreach consultations Grateful for the invite (THANK YOU) to continue to be in spaces where the conversation is rooted in how we move the needle forward in creating equitable spaces of education and the ACTION that follows the conversation.
