At Zūm, we put the safety of students and drivers first. In recognition of National School Bus Safety Week, here are some tips for families to ensure school bus safety: Keep a Safe Distance: When waiting for the bus, students should stand at least 10 feet away from the edge of the road. Always Cross in Front: Students who need to cross the street when getting on or off of the bus should always walk in front of the bus, never behind it. Most importantly: before crossing in front of the bus, students should wait for the driver’s signal to cross. Do Not Pass: Motorists are required by law to stop for stopped school buses that are displaying flashing red lights and a stop arm. Never pass a stopped school bus. Shine Bright: Bright clothing and reflective gear on jackets, shoes, hats, and backpacks increases a student’s odds of being seen by drivers, especially if students are traveling at dawn or dusk. Meet Your Kids at the Stop: Those adults or family members who meet children at the bus stop after school should wait on the side where the child will be dropped off, not across the street. Manitoba drivers, parents, and children all have a role to play in school bus safety! #SchoolBusSafetyWeek The greatest risk comes when children are getting on and off the bus. Here’s what you as a motorist should know to be safe around the school bus: ?? When a school bus displays its stop signs and flashing red lights, it’s not an option to stop, it’s the law. ?? If you’re approaching a stopped bus from EITHER direction, you must stop 5 metres (16 ft) away — unless the roadway has a physical barrier (like a boulevard). ?? You must remain stopped until the lights stop flashing, the stop arm folds away, and the bus begins to move. Parents can also help educate their kids on school bus safety: ?? You must stay at least 3 metres (10 ft) away from the 3 danger zones — the front, sides, and back of the bus. ?? You must take 5 big steps back from the road when the bus is approaching. ?? You have to wait until the bus comes to a full stop before getting on or off. ?? If you have to cross the street near a school bus, never cross from behind! The child should the bus driver’s permission, take 5 giant steps past the front of the bus, and make sure the driver sees them (eye contact) before crossing. ?? If you drop something near or under the bus, you should never try to retrieve it without the driver’s permission. Let’s all do our part to ensure school bus safety and keep our children safe!! #educationiskey

School bus safety is important all year long ― and it’s up to all Texas drivers to make sure they’re following the speed limit and obeying traffic laws in school zones. Sgt. Clark is here today to share important safety tips for everyone to follow. As a reminder, according to Texas law, if a bus has alternating flashing red signals visible from the front or rear, drivers MUST stop before reaching the bus. Drivers can only proceed if the flashing lights are no longer activated, the driver signals you to proceed or the bus has resumed driving. Approaching drivers do NOT have to stop for a school bus that is operating a visual signal if the road is separated by a physical barrier or an intervening space. If a highway is only divided by a left-turn lane, it is not considered divided, and drivers must stop for school buses. ?? Courtesy of DPS' Southeast Texas Region #SchoolBusSafety
