It is an honor to be selected as an #ASHAInnovator by The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) this year. For me, healthcare innovation is about solving real problems that impact both patients and professionals. It’s about making healthcare more human-centered and accessible. As a clinician with 15 years of experience across healthcare settings in the US, I’ve seen the care gaps and problems firsthand and witnessed all that's broken in our health systems. This lived experience is what gives us the unique perspective and opportunity, as clinicians, to be an integral part of digital health solutions and the healthcare innovation ecosystem. My entrepreneurial journey in co-founding the Swallowing Training and Education Portal (STEP) online #dysphagia education company, has been rooted in the belief that clinicians need accessible, affordable, evidence-based resources to truly make an impact. Since 2018, STEP has helped tens of thousands of #speechlanguagepathology clinicians and students advance their knowledge, skills, and confidence in managing #swallowingdisorders. It’s about creating a ripple effect: equipping clinicians with the right tools and training so they can, in turn, provide better care to their patients. More recently, I founded Theratactix Digital Health Consulting to collaborate with mission-aligned organizations, helping them turn innovative healthcare ideas into impactful solutions. By combining clinical expertise with technology, I help businesses design and develop products that meet both clinical needs and business goals, ensuring they deliver real-world value while achieving ROI and growth. As I continue on this path, I’m excited to keep learning, collaborating, and exploring ways to innovate and create a more patient-centered healthcare system. Lots of talk, but a struggle... Improving the patient experience requires better engagement to inform and truly educate people about their?health issues. Try these top ideas for true patient education: 1. Personalization and Clarity: Information is too generic or complex to understand. Tailor information to a patient’s specific needs, health literacy, and cultural context—using plain language— to greatly improve comprehension. 2. Practical Skills Training: Patients often learn “what” to do but lack guidance on “how” and "why" to do it effectively. Practical, hands-on training, e.g. using medical devices or managing symptoms, can empower patients to apply what they’ve learned. 3. Ongoing Support and Follow-Up: Education is often treated as a one-time interaction. Ongoing engagement, follow-ups, reminders, and additional resources reinforce learning, especially for chronic conditions. 4. Empathy and Emotional Support: True patient education should address the emotional impact of a diagnosis. There isn't a secret to success in healthcare?? Why..? Because success is not secretive; it's straightforward After working in 100+ clinics across the globe I could not help but the notice common traits successful clinics practised without exception. So, instead of traveling (unless you want to) to see for yourself, here are the three things every successful clinic had in common 1) They were consistent in three areas a. Treatment protocols b. Clear patient communication c. Marketing efforts 2) They followed up with patients regularly before and after treatments This shows the patient you care and, by default, also improves retention; it's disheartening for patients when their a provider does not check-in on them after leaving the clinic. 3) They invest in continuous education and training Conferences and online courses for their team are not viewed as unpleasant expenses but as exciting investments with a high ROI. #HealthCare #Physicians
