DRIVING EFFICIENCY: LEAN TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES Efficiency is at the core of lean manufacturing. Several tools and techniques are employed to streamline operations and drive improvements: Value Stream Mapping: This technique involves visualising the entire production process to identify non-value-added activities and opportunities for improvement. By mapping the value stream, manufacturers can eliminate waste and create more efficient processes. 5S Methodology: Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardise, and Sustain. This is a workplace organisation method that promotes cleanliness, organization, and efficiency. A well-organized workspace reduces wasted time and movement. Just-in-Time (JIT) Inventory: JIT inventory management ensures that materials are ordered and received just in time for production. This minimizes excess inventory, reduces storage costs, and keeps production efficient. Manufacturing Is Magical! Even after 27.5 years of being in manufacturing domain (16 factories till date and one more coming soon), every shop floor visit (quite often in my case) brings me, excitement and joy, to see large and latest machines producing high quality goods every second, every hour, minute and day, throughout the year, without resting. These machines can convert anything into some useful products. While, technology keeps evolving (Industry 1.0 to 4.0 has taken around 100 years) and has had a great tole to play, what keeps producing finest products is passion of people on the shop floor. The success of myriad continuous improvements ideated and implemented by 1000s of shop floor year on year personnel amazes me. While service industry too employs lot of people, manufacturing employs bottom of the pyramid human capital, thus making economy more inclusive in nature. While service industry professionals too need to work hard to earn their bread, manufacturing folks work in a tougher environment and in remote places. It's a sight to behold- uniformed workers entering and exiting factories every 8 hours on the siren honk, day in and day out. So, do I say, manufacturing is magical.
