EU InnovationFund programme opened today! ?? €4.6 billion is the new #InnovationFund budget to support cutting-edge net-zero technologies, electric vehicle batteries, and renewable hydrogen projects. ?? General Call: CINEA implemented major improvements to the application process and GHG methodology while simplifying the templates (ex: BP and Feasibility study) and adding precise guidelines for the supporting documents and letters. The call includes five topics: general decarbonisation for large-scale, medium-scale, and small-scale projects, cleantech manufacturing, and a pilot covering all the sectors of the EU-ETS, despite the budget decrease and its repartition on hydrogen auction and batteries call. ?? ?? A separate Innovation Fund 2024 Battery Call (IF24 Battery) allocates €1 billion specifically for electric vehicle battery cell manufacturing projects that demonstrate innovative technologies, processes, or products and increase the resilience of the value chain ? The application deadline for both calls is the 24th of April 2025 ??? Hydrogen Auctions for general usage with a budget of €1 billion and the maritime with a budget of €0.2 billion sector also opened today! ? €4.6 bn from the EU Innovation fund reads great. Thereof €1 bn for battery cell manufacturing appears good as well. But in light of recent developments, the EU imho doesn't need #hopium. It doesn't urgently need 24 national, mostly strategically unaligned funding schemes which only can be seen serving as a symbolic straw fire compared to investments taken for over two decades in Asia. The EU strategic industrial cluster policy which is aligned. Strong local content policies for all mayor downstream players like Utilities/IPPs & big tech energy customers. But even more urgently, local content requirements for Capex within that. At least in my experience, the true know-how nowadays does not mostly lie in academics, publicly funded research or at any single manufacturer. It lies at those equipment makers which either scale or vanish. Am I to critical after the recent Northvolt learnings? Or is the EU with all it' lobbyists just to complex, slow, convenient? Naively wasting lot's of energy on topics like SDGS, circularity, "passport" reporting etc. before the basic innovation job with bold, risky leaps onto the next cleantech tech generation is done. PS Those EU cleantech equipment makers I know are mostly still having good business. In the US, India ...
