?? Reflecting on a Conversation with Magnus Gustafsson, Former CEO of Coldwater Seafood USA ?? I recently had the honor of engaging in a conversation with Magnus Gustafsson, who served as the CEO of Coldwater Seafood USA from 1984 to 2005, overseeing two major seafood processing plants in Maryland and Massachusetts. Under his guidance, the company played a significant role, processing and selling around 30% of all fish exported from Iceland in the eighties and nineties. Diving into the insights shared in his recently published memoir, "Mee skyra syn" (Thinking), our discussion explored the multifaceted challenges of managing a food processing plant in the US. With over 600 employees and 50 brokers, Coldwater Seafood USA held an important position in the seafood export landscape for Iceland. Magnus generously shares his experiences, meticulously detailing the challenges and victories of his remarkable 21-year tenure, encompassing responsibilities in production, sales and marketing, finance, and more in his memoir. A seasoned CEO with a solid old-school foundation—starting as a mechanic in Iceland, mastering machine technology in Denmark, and participating in high-level management seminars at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA—Magnus possessed the qualities essential for success and respect as a CEO in the US. Known for his friendly and approachable demeanor, he effortlessly connected with individuals at all levels in the company hierarchy, leaving a lasting impact and building a network of clients nationwide. In summary, my conversation with Magnus reinforced the importance of quality products, the inevitability of competition, and the critical role of a strong and motivated team of employees in ensuring the success of any business. As someone managing a small food processing plant in the US (Reykjavik Creamery), the conversation with Magnus was both educational and enriching. He serves as a testament to the power of diverse skills and a strong work ethic. Magnus Gustafsson exemplifies the resilience and leadership essential in the dynamic world of business.
