As a board member, you’re making significant and regular financial contributions to the organization you’re serving - and likely several others ?? You’re one of the best candidates to get the most out of a Donor Advised Fund - a DAF is a tax advantaged investment account, like a 401k, but it can exclusively be used for charitable giving ?? It helps you increase your generosity by saving on your taxes and making an irreversible commitment to your philanthropic goals ?? Once you put money or assets (like appreciated securities) into a DAF, money can only ever leave the account to give to DAF-eligible nonprofits ? Donors love using a DAF because it streamlines their giving, especially with DAFpay letting them use their DAF more easily than a credit card anywhere they’re inspired to give online ?? Nonprofits want donors to use their DAF because it results in twice as much support! (Shown in the recent DAF Fundraising Report) ?? I have a DAF account, I get my monthly contributions matched by my employer and have it invested in the market ?? Even without tax benefits, my capacity is doubled + the investments are up 13% YTD ?? So far this year, I’ve made an extra 4 donations to The Center because they have DAFpay enabled on their website and peer to peer forms ???? How Do We Engage the Next Generation of Givers? Years ago, I was teaching my young daughter about the power of giving. Each holiday season, we’d stand outside the mall, ringing the Salvation Army bell together. It became a tradition, one I hoped would instill values of compassion and generosity. One day, driving home, we saw a man under a bridge holding a sign that read: Homeless, can you spare 25 cents? My daughter, no older than six, turned to me and said, “Can I give him all my piggy bank money so he can buy a house?” I remember gripping the steering wheel, unable to answer. Tears silently streamed down my face. She didn’t just see the sign—she saw the person. I think about this experience often because it begged a bigger question: How are we, as fundraisers, teaching and engaging the next generation in philanthropy? If nonprofits want to thrive, they must master the art of engaging donors across generations. Baby Boomers want to leave a legacy. Millennials demand alignment with their values. Gen Z is out there creating viral social campaigns before they’re even old enough to rent a car. But too often, nonprofits focus on immediate dollars instead of cultivating relationships that last a lifetime. If you’re not meeting each generation where they are, you’re leaving money—and impact—on the table. Here’s What Needs to Change: Engage Boomers With Legacy Stop sending generic thank-you notes. Show them how their giving is creating something tangible and enduring. Prove Yourself to Gen X They’re skeptical, and they value efficiency. Skip the hype and show them real, measurable outcomes. Give Millennials Purpose They’ll give if your cause aligns with their identity—but they want transparency, collaboration, and to feel like insiders. Empower Gen Z to Act This is the generation of instant action. If your campaigns aren’t mobile, shareable, and inclusive, you’re missing them entirely. What Will You Do Differently?
