The Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (RIDE) is conducting a survey to gather information about the services provided by school mental health professionals in RI. This survey will help improve the consistency and effectiveness of mental health services across districts and schools. Responses are anonymous, voluntary, and can be paused and resumed later. We encourage all school mental health professionals to participate and share their insights. https://lnkd.in/eMEN8vAj Thank you for contributing to stronger mental health supports in our schools!

School staff and administrators: New CDC data show that 92% of schools provide universal mental health promotion programs, and 78% provide confidential mental health screening to identify students in need of services. Although schools are working to support adolescent mental health, they cannot do it alone. Schools need support to continue their efforts to help students. CDC developed a Mental Health Action Guide to help schools build on the work they are doing and fill in gaps. Explore the action guide during Mental Health Awareness Month: https://bit.ly/47um5NN

In today’s digital age, it’s no surprise that the constant stream of edited photos, filters and unrealistic standards can take a toll on the self-esteem and mental health of young people. Every scroll can feel like a comparison game, leaving many teens feeling inadequate or striving for the impossible. According to a Mental Health Foundation study, 79% of 11-16 year olds in the UK said how they look is important to them, and 52% often worry about how they look. In next week’s session, we’ll be joined by Dr Amita Jassi BSc(hons) DClinPsy, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and lead for the National Specialist BDD service for young people at South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, to talk about Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Discover how to recognise the signs of BDD in your teen, including obsession with appearance and comparison to others, and explore its impact on mental health and self-esteem. Dr Jassi will offer some essential guidance for parents and family members, with considerations for neurodiverse teens and the potential effects on siblings. Join us live on Monday at 8pm. NHS England’s recent survey identified that One in Five children and young people (aged 8 to 25) had a probable mental disorder in 2023. This study also highlighted that the children completing these surveys had the following to say about their education settings: · They have at least one friend/person they could turn to for support at school (75.3% agreed) · They feel safe when at school (56.3% agreed) These two statistics alone, show the incredible impact that education settings and professionals can have in supporting children’s mental health. This years’ Children's Mental Health Week theme is “My Voice Matters”. There are many ways that we can support children in finding their voice, such as reading books like “The Lion Inside by Rachel Bright and Jim Field” or using flashcards to support them identifying and explaining their emotions. Here are a few links to ideas and activities ready for this week: https://lnkd.in/e8QQTC_v https://lnkd.in/ekJSiUSn https://lnkd.in/eBPM6fwj It is everyone’s responsibility to safeguard children, this too includes their mental health. So, this week here at Balfor, we want to encourage you to be a role model to the children in your care and lives, by demonstrating your voice, and encouraging them to use theirs! #childrensmentalhealthweek #mentalhealth #myvoicematters

Early intervention is key ?
I was once the executive director of a youth mental health organization. I'm the one who received the cases of young children in need of mental health support and I saw a lot of consistent themes that would later be shown as early signs of mental health issues and suicide. The science took a while to catch up to what I was seeing anecdotally. Next month I'll be presenting, "Spotting Students at Risk of Suicide: Signs and Early Intervention Strategies for Grades PK-6" to school Counselors for the Nebraska Dept of Education and I wanted to share one of the early traits that should invite early intervention. Because it works. This was not an issue my own son, Charles had but it is a theme I saw early in countless cases we received for funding. This trait is low self-esteem. Some kids will make self-deprecating remarks like, "Everyone hates me," "I'm so ugly," "I'm so stupid." It's not a child who says this offhand only once but rather a child who is repeatedly putting himself/herself/themself down. Many times a pediatrician and anyone else you mention it to will say, "Oh they'll grow out of it," trying to dismiss your worry or make you seem overprotective. Don't buy it. Don't let your brain or theirs talk you out of what you know in your gut. It's been gnawing at you, keeping you up at night, you need to intervene now because it will help later and lower risk, and build resilience. This is an opportunity to lay down a path for future success and become a better parent, educator, and clinician. If you want the case study, let me know and I'll send you the link. The names were changed in the document to protect privacy. Early intervention works! #mentalhealth

The CREATE Centre and The Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use, University of Sydney are seeking input from early childhood educators to inform the development of play based program that encourages children to engage with their peers and develop healthy social and emotional skills. Researcher believe pretend play in early childhood may enhance social and emotional skills in young children and prevent the onset of mental health concerns. However pretend play can be a challenge to implement in a group with so many different needs and behaviours to manage. As such, researchers are seeking the help of educators by completing an online survey. https://hubs.ly/Q02L_RyW0

Wyoming is taking a thoughtful approach to mental health in schools. Before making further investments, lawmakers are focusing on evaluating the success of pilot programs like Project AWARE and BARR. Rep. Lloyd Larsen emphasizes the importance of data-driven decisions while addressing concerns about the availability of mental health providers. In Sheridan County, local districts are proactively supporting students with programs like Sources of Strength and trauma-informed care. This strategic approach aims to balance effective support with the realities of resource availability. #MentalHealth #Education #Policy
