Negotiation often seems like a black box for those new or fairly early in their careers. Here's the ultimate 5-point checklist that I have accrued over the years as a great mental model to navigate negotiations: 1?? Research industry standards and salary ranges for your role. Websites like Glassdoor and LinkedIn Salary Insights offer valuable data. Knowing your market value strengthens your negotiating position. 2?? Articulate your skills, achievements, and contributions. Show how you've added value in past roles to demonstrate why you deserve fair compensation. 3?? Set a target salary range instead of a single number. Aim higher than your minimum to leave room for negotiation. 4?? Consider the entire compensation package, including benefits, bonuses, stock options, and growth opportunities. Non-monetary perks can add significant value. 5?? Approach negotiations positively and professionally. Clearly communicate your expectations, listen to the employer's perspective, and seek common ground. Last year, my friend was joining a company and I helped him negotiate a higher salary using some of the techniques from Chris Voss's book. Here are a few key takeaways that we found helpful: Empathy is key. ?? By actively listening and validating feelings, we were able to create a more collaborative atmosphere. This helped my friend feel heard and confident during his discussions with the hiring manager. Quote salary range in odd numbers. ?? Always quote salary ranges in odd numbers! I told my friend about this tip and it really made a difference. Tactical pauses can be powerful. ?
