What does China’s J-35A stealth fighter mean for US air power over Taiwan? J-35A is no match for the F-35 and the skills of USAF/USN pilots. The problem sets for the USAF and USN are the numbers of PLAAF and PLANAF aircraft, the proximity of their bases to the fight, and the large amount of PLA Rocket Forces that can damage American and Japanese air assets on the ground, runway and logistics facilities (ammo, fuel and maintenance).

Latest: While the Royal Air Force recently received two new Lightning F-35B jets, delays in TR-3 software implementation have raised questions about the delivery of the remaining 13 Lockheed Martin jets. To date, 35 Lockheed Martin aircraft have been delivered to the Royal Air Force (RAF) with a total of 48 fighters on contract.?Citing commercial sensitivity, the UK Ministry of Defence would not detail the delivery timeline of the remaining 13 aircraft, but it said they would arrive by the end of 2025. The two newly delivered stealth fighters were the last ones in the TR-2 configuration, and Lockheed confirmed that the upcoming jets will arrive with the TR-3 software. To keep its fighters ahead of the curve and compatible with modern weapon systems, the UK said last September that it would bring the whole fleet up to TR-3 Block 4 standard. The Ministry did not answer questions regarding the upgrading process of the existing fleet of fighters. Within the UK framework, adherence to the Block 4 standard is essential for equipping the fighter jets with the Meteor and SPEAR 3 weapon systems. BAE Systems, a core partner in the UK F-35 programme, announced in 2019 that it had begun work to integrate both weapons into the F-35B. Originally slated for completion by 2025, this endeavour faced a?setback earlier this year, resulting in a delay of approximately five years.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but there is still a lot of work to be done to make our next gen fighter & airborne capabilities to work efficiently and effectively in a Pacific regional conflict. Planning for the future is necessary but we haven’t even yet fully employed our newest, very exquisite 5th gen platforms to determine what gaps exist in capabilities. Yet again the answer to the China threat is to invest in another very expensive, exquisite capability.

??Use Case “Russian soldier driving on a BMP-3 IFV throws his rifle at an incoming Ukrainian FPV drone in a last-ditch attempt to take it down, potentially saving his and his comrades' life.” -when I put these scenes up on this platform I don’t do so lightly. This could be anyone of us in uniform somewhere in the world facing a similar capability…and the required solution is not “desperately throw service rifle at it” - countering these systems also means integrating them for employment. No military ever did anti-aircraft artillery as a singular solution to enemy air threats -various types of fighters and interceptors were developed as a layered solution all the down to the close in kinetic kill requirement.
