Happy #WorldWildlifeDay! Today is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the abundance and diversity of our local Oxfordshire and Berkshire plants, animals and ecosystems. Oxfordshire supports a number of national/international priority habitats, including chalk grassland, beech woodland, fen, wetland and marshland and is also a critical area for freshwater biodiversity. Similarly, Berkshire boasts many principal habitats such as heathland, wetland, traditional orchards, grassland and woodland. Each of these habitats support a number of nationally rare/threatened birds, mammals, plants and invertebrates, as well as offering research and conservation opportunities. As spring approaches, there is yet more opportunity to get involved in #citizenscience approaches, all of which contribute to conservation efforts in these important ecosystems. So, what local wildlife and habitats do you want to celebrate today #LetsGetRecording #Wildlife #Nature #everyoneneedsnature #UKConservation #Spring

Nature is slowly healing': How rewilding is bringing Britain's extinct species back from the dead. The amazing powers of regeneration are evident in sites across the country, where reintroduced species restore habitats and long-lost beetles emerge from extinction. #rewilding #regeneration #habitatcreation https://lnkd.in/e2Mh3ksX

Butterfly Highways: Conserving Roadside Habitats for Monarchs and Pollinators - One of the best strategies to support monarchs and other pollinators is to create ecological corridors along roadsides that will provide monarchs with food sources as they make their way along the Central Monarch Flyway. This migratory corridor stretches from the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacán, Mexico, north through Texas, to the key breeding habitat in the Midwest and Great Lakes. https://lnkd.in/gggt_2U2

Here's an interesting story about a novel ecosystem that's working out for a threatened species. African boxthorn is a nasty weed with few fans, but stick-nest rats love eating its leaves and building nests in its spiky branches on Reevesby Island. Neither species previously occurred on the island, but it can be argued that their 'alliance' has been helpful for this insurance population of greater stick-nest rats. Nice work by authors Annie Kraehe, Kathryn Hill, Robert Hill and Ver Weisbecker. These situations are really interesting for the questions they provoke about what we value in conservation work. I think it's important we confront these questions. If you're up for some stimulating debate, I can recommend the writing of environmental provocateur Emma Marris - Wild Souls and Rambunctious Garden.
The greater stick-nest rat almost went extinct. Now it’s found an unlikely ally: one of Australia’s worst weeds

Senior Lecturer - Fellow at Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) at National University of Singapore (NUS)
It is so heartening to come across an article in which my former Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) student Wang Yu Wei describes his experiences with my RVN2001 The Great Extinction: conservation and rewilding module (former RVN1001) as "An eye-opening experience with nature". Yu Wei summarises his learning experience as: "I learnt quite a lot about sustainability and conservation practices through this module. I enjoyed the field trips and the animal identification projects the most, as it was fun taking photos and identifying insects and birds." More about his experiences with the module can be read here: https://lnkd.in/grPXhMis #nus #outdooreducation #outdoorlearning #experientiallearning #nature #conservation #wildlife #rvrc

Take Action! ???Vote YES for Prop 4! “Support Proposition 4 to inject $10 BILLION into California’s parks, energy, and water resources, with $2 billion dedicated to vital wetland restoration”. ?????? 95% of California’s wetlands are already gone and #DucksUnlimited strongly believes the funds designated for Prop 4 are critical to implement projects that restore, protect and enhance wildlife habitat, biodiversity, and water resiliency. DU has utilized similar bond funds, authorized by voters, to create lasting, and meaningful conservation projects. Please follow the link to see a list! ???? #naturebasedsolutions

Rewilding: A Journey from Farm to Wildlife Haven ???? I've just finished reading about Derek Gow's incredible transformation of his Devon farm into a 300-acre rewilding sanctuary. It's a powerful reminder of what's possible when we commit to restoring our native ecosystems. Gow's story is both inspiring and eye-opening: ? He's created habitats for beavers, water voles, lynx, wildcats, and more ? His work has been crucial in reintroducing species like the white stork ? He's even raised a sofa-loving wild boar piglet! ?? But it's not just about the animals. Gow's journey highlights the urgent need to address biodiversity loss in the UK. He paints a vivid picture of a landscape that could be: ? Teeming with diverse wildlife ? Echoing with the calls of long-lost bird species ? Resilient and self-sustaining His message is clear: We have the knowledge and ability to reverse the decline of our native species. It's time to act. What do you think? Is rewilding the answer to restoring our natural heritage? Have you seen any rewilding projects in your area? Let's discuss how we can all contribute to a wilder, more biodiverse Britain. ?????? #Rewilding #Biodiversity #Conservation #WildlifeRestoration #UKNature
