Every year our company takes time off to be together at our annual retreat. No work, no agenda, just time to play. I feel strongly that life is hard enough and it is rare that adults get time to let go and play, relax, and be treated without the weight of responsibility. Each year these retreats mean more to our team and culture. Yes, it is an investment, but one I would make over and over because of the impacts I've seen: ?? Greater trust between team members. When we have the opportunity to see and know each other on a personal level, that one slack that seems harsh doesn't matter. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and choose trust more often. ?? Faster and more efficient work. When you learn people's communication styles outside of the workspace, there is shared understanding and connection that leads to faster work and fewer misunderstandings. ? We serve our clients better. When our cups are full and the team is grounded, our clients see the benefit. We come back with renewed energy to bring what we experienced to our clients. To serve them, care for them, and win for them. The motivation is unbeatable. ? ? Greater collaboration, teamwork, and loyalty to each other. We work as a team, not as individuals. Agency life is hard and often wrought with politics and 'every man for himself' mentality. With so much time together outside of the office, we have built a culture where the team is FOR each other - they celebrate each other's wins in ways that still blow me away. ?? Memories that last a lifetime. I have no idea how long Marketwake will be a part of each person's story. But whether it is for a lifetime or a short season, what is it all worth if we aren't able to have a positive impact? We are in the legacy business, that doesn't happen behind our computers, it happens when we are making memories together. Memories that connect people who may never have been friends otherwise but now share something special. Tips if you want to do this as leadership: Make sure it's a judgment-free zone, you laugh a lot, be yourself, and create 'magic moments' for the team to experience together. It's all in the details.
