Deadline alert! ?? PFAS reporting in Canada is due in only a few weeks. In 2024, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) released a Notice under Section 71 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), requiring businesses to submit data on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for the 2023 calendar year by January 29, 2025. ?? Now, what is PFAS reporting all about?? PFAS are synthetic organic compounds that do not naturally occur in the environment. Due to their strong fluorine-carbon bond, these "forever chemicals" do not degrade and can accumulate, causing harm. Therefore, reporting PFAS data is not only crucial for compliance with the CEPA – it also helps protect the environment and public health. ???? By submitting this data, you assist in regulatory efforts to assess and manage associated risks. Unsure if your company is obligated to report or what data needs to be reported? On July 15, 2024, Environment and Climate Change Canada announced new efforts to tackle per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as "forever chemicals." These persistent human-made substances are found in many everyday products and have significant environmental and health impacts. Key Measures: - Updated PFAS Report: The Government published a Draft State of PFAS Report and a revised Risk Management Scope, concluding that most PFAS are harmful to human health and the environment. - Fluoropolymer Assessment: A separate assessment for fluoropolymers, potentially adding them to the CEPA Watch List. - Phased Approach: Starting with regulations to restrict PFAS in firefighting foams, followed by additional measures for other uses. Public Consultation: Stakeholders are invited to comment on the update until September 11, 2024. Canada remains committed to addressing the risks of PFAS and is among the first jurisdictions to tackle these chemicals comprehensively. The Government will continue using a science-based approach to protect the health of Canadians and the environment. Did you cross paths with members of the #PFAS family? If your organization meets the federal government’s criteria for reporting perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, Environment and Climate Change Canada wants to hear from you. While various regulations restrict and control the use of certain PFAS variants, the federal government introduced a one-time reporting requirement with a view to potentially mapping out regulation down the road. Under Section 71 of the?Canadian Environmental Protection Act, businesses and other organizations must — with some exceptions — report the manufacture, sale, offer for sale, import, and use in 2023 of 312 specified PFAS variants. The reporting deadline is January 29, 2025 and Environment Canada spokesperson Josh Brighton describes it as a one-time event aimed at cataloguing the general presence of PFAS rather than measuring specific volumes. “This initiative is to gather baseline data to support future decision making, therefore it is not a recurrent initiative that will carry on in future years,” says Brighton. #environment #regulation #law Actual Media Inc. https://lnkd.in/ggVPHdtV

??Great news for those with PFAS reporting requirements to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)! On October 11, 2023, the EPA implemented a Final Rule mandating reporting and recordkeeping obligations for entities manufacturing or importing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) since January 1, 2011. The primary objective was to establish a comprehensive database of previously manufactured PFAS, providing the EPA with a deep understanding of PFAS in commercial circulation. Remember, this one-time reporting process was to be submitted via EPA's Central Data Exchange (CDX), initially scheduled to open on November 12, 2024, however Attention! ?? ?? On September 4, 2024, the EPA announced a significant change in an unpublished Direct Final Rule. ??Due to a lack of internal EPA resources to service and modify the CDX system, the reporting window has been postponed to July 11, 2025. Not bad, right? While not officially confirmed, it's presumed that the deadline will be January 11, 2026, maintaining the original 6-month reporting window. ??It's important to note that all other aspects of the original October 2023 Final Rule remain unchanged. ??Now let's wait and have a hope that Environment and Climate Change Canada will also adjust their timelines ;) Once that happens, we can all breathe a little easier! #EPAUpdate #PFASReporting #PFASRegulation #RegulatoryUpdate #DeadlineExtension #ComplianceAlert #CompliancePreparation #PFASManagement

Here’s a useful primer on the current state of play for PFAS policy in Israel, kindly compiled by Danniel Sharon from the Ministry of Environmental Protection. On 11 December 2024, this was presented at the OECD Environment webinar sharing global updates on PFAS risk management, highlighting Israel’s proactive efforts: 1?? Drinking Water Contamination: PFAS was detected in 21% of sampled drinking water wells, with six already closed due to exceeding thresholds. By 2026, stricter thresholds are expected to impact more wells. 2?? Industrial and Wastewater Sources: PFAS contamination was found in 85% of industrial wastewater samples, 80% of landfill leachates, and 50% of stream samples. 3?? Regulatory Actions: Israel is focusing on mapping contamination hotspots, identifying AFFF as a major source, and implementing an action plan to address PFAS in industrial sources and waste streams. For a global perspective, check out my other posts on the EU’s comprehensive regulatory framework and Japan’s science-driven initiatives, also presented during the webinar. #PFAS #Israel #ChemicalPolicy #EnvironmentalProtection

Fire-fighting foams commonly contain PFAS, including PFOS historically and, more recently, PFOA. PFOS and its related substances were severely restricted under the Stockholm Convention in May 2009, followed by restrictions on PFOA its salts and its related compounds in May 2019. While the use of PFOS is already banned, there are some time-limited exemptions for the use of PFOA its salts and related compounds, under the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation (EU) 2019/1021. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for overseeing implementation of the POPs Regulation’s requirements in Ireland. While the current focus is the time-limited restrictions on the use of PFOA, its salts and PFOA-related compounds, further restrictions are likely to extend to other PFAS including proposals under the EU Chemical Strategy for Sustainability to eliminate all non-essential uses of PFAS which will include usage in AFFF. Congratulations Ireland ???? , the major importer’s of fire extinguishers made the move away from AFFF some years ago, there are some smaller straggler’s…… Echa is coming, so don’t burden the end user with poor risk assessments. ???? Good news from the European Council for the water community!! ?? The Council agreed on a negotiating mandate to update the list of pollutants in surface and ground water. The mandate allows the Council to start talks with the European Parliament on the final text of?the directive which will amend the water framework directive, the groundwater directive and the directive on environmental quality standards (EQS). ?? The new directive will add pollutants and related EQS for some per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (#PFAS), #pharmaceuticals and #pesticides to the list of water pollutants. ?? ?? This will improve the quality of European water and bring new challenges to the #watertesting labs in Europe which we at Waters Corporation are happy to help solving. ??
