I always enjoy Adam J. Epstein's posts and newsletters. This example was not just an inspired chair; it was also a courageous one. Too many boards don't pause enough during their meeting and miss the opportunity for deep reflection. This is no substitute for the deep reflection we have upon reading our papers, it is additional and allows us to reflect on the valuable contributions of our board colleagues. Only then are we prepared to make decisions based on our collective and individual thinking. I am doing writing exercises, so buckle up :) (context in the original post - not clickbait, but I am sharing opportunities from both organizers and ticket buyers perspective so separate-ish) Event fam with who're producing these big tent industry events with wide topic coverage - my two cents. If your event attendees are on small teams, but only one or two titles coming through, it may be worth exploring opportunities to provide value to other members of their team. What does an integrated, cost effective, "team retreat" experience look like for your event? Turn 1 attendee into 4 or 10(!)? There is an opportunity - one that may have been tried and failed plenty of times, but it can't ALWAYS fail, right? Lean into the package pricing for teams. Diversify your content and engagement strategies for the top 4-5 titles most commonly seen on these teams, nurture sub communities within your attendees based on responsibilities on the ground level of a business. Create the space, be smart about programming and scheduling, and you create a completely unique, but clearly integrated experience between the teams on their retreats and you, their host, in ways that capitalize on what already exists with your primary event. Your event might be the setting of their favorite team story. The margin might be a bit tighter on this type of experience for 5-10% of ticket holders, but guest count, floor time, and face time are meaningful metrics for vendors and these groups of attendees are in go-mode. Also - go slow and don't wreck your event by leaning to hard into this to quickly. Respect what you've got working for you. And let the folks who want to piggyback piggyback in peace if they so chose :-)

It's time to think about a crucial aspect that often goes unnoticed, but still has a significant impact on retaining and attracting corporate sponsors—the role of your board leadership in sponsor relations. We came across a compelling story from one of our association sales execs that really brings this week's focus to life. They shared, “We had a corporate sponsor drop their partnership with my client because the sponsor didn't feel welcomed by the board at events. Board members weren't making an effort to say hi or introduce themselves, creating a cliquey atmosphere. The sponsor mentioned he would rather invest where the board makes him feel important.” This story sheds light on a simple yet profound truth: the warmth and inclusivity extended by board members can directly influence a sponsor's decision to continue their partnership. Meet Lorna Vythilingum, Membership Director. ????????????????: What strategies do you plan to implement to foster a strong and engaged Rotaract community ? ????????????: First of all, I would like to create a welcoming atmosphere for new members by organising team-building activities and pairing them with mentors or fellow members. I believe this would make them more comfortable which would encourage them to interact with other Rotaract members to form personal connections. To further engage everyone in our community, I would like to collaborate with other Rotary clubs for mentorship programmes, community service projects and networking opportunities. This will not only contribute to the personal and professional growth of our members, but will also strengthen our relationship with other clubs. In this regard, it would foster a sense of purpose and shared values that will appeal to our members. Moreover, I intend to establish a feedback system to better understand member preferences, concerns, and suggestions so as to improve our service. Lastly, I intend to emphasize on the acknowledgement and appreciation of our members for their contributions through awards, certificates, or public recognition during meetings. I believe this would convey the sense of community ownership and engagement which is one of the values that our Rotaract preaches.

Fantastic to listen to the winners of the Change Awards last week talk about their valuable experiences of Change within their own public sector organisations and careers to date - a really insightful conversation to listen to ?? There were literally loads but here are some of my Key takeaways from the discussion which my Tech Change and Change community on LinkedIn may find of interest and could resonate with - ?? Know your audience - recognise when something is not working and move quickly ?? Know what your ask is of senior leaders - clear asks pave for clear engagement ?? When you work for an organisation, you are representing that organisation - you are not separate from it or the change in any way ?? Use organisational values and human values to underpin the change ?? You don't always need to be a disruptor - the spirit will get you some distance but tone of voice is equally important ?? It's important to change from a cultural perspective, not just a project/programme perspective ?? You need to get really good at reading the mood, even the most subtle changes ?? You can't impose successful change - you need to appeal to people and bring people along with you by winning hearts and minds. How do you do that? I attended a brilliant Enterprise Nation networking event yesterday; a massive shout out to Dan Martin for organising in person events and St George's Bristol for hosting - I know there are so many benefits to the digital world, but I still really love being able to meet and connect with people face to face! It was so nice to see some familiar faces and meet some new people; it was amazing to see the huge range of businesses just in one room and so inspiring to hear people speak so passionately about them. (*Slap on the wrist* - must not start another business.....yet ?? ) We also talked a lot about the challenges people are facing, from burn out to future plans to the struggles following COVID. Business is rarely all sunshine and rainbows, and I think it is great for everyone to feel like they're not alone and share ideas on how they cope with things. This seems like the perfect time to say that Bristol City Council and West of England Growth Hub has a huge variety of support available for SME's; from mentoring and coaching to grants for R&D, help with exporting to support with your marketing plan!
