The week has finally arrived. This is the week where we move out of our house. And the mess at our home is unimaginable - Boxes everywhere, items marked for donation, items to give away to friends, neighbors and items to sell second hand..the list is endless. Amidst the clutter, my gaze fell upon our medical box, revealing a collection of unused and expired supplies—test kits, thermometers, and hand sanitizers. Sorting through the items, I couldn't help but feel disheartened by the amount of medical waste generated. Reflecting on our journey with these supplies, acquired through grassroots COVID-19 programs, I realized the importance of responsible disposal and mindful consumption. Contemplating solutions, I envision a future where medical recycling bins stand alongside traditional recycling facilities, offering an accessible avenue for disposing of unexpired medical products. Additionally, adopting a mindset of selective acceptance and returning unused items could further reduce waste and promote sustainability. Though challenges lie ahead in implementation, the potential benefits for future generations drive the imperative for action. It's time to rethink our approach to medical waste and embrace initiatives that pave the way for a more sustainable society #medicalwaste #healthaccess??#healthsustainaibility??

These are just a few of the lanyards from recent conferences and speaking engagements headed for the trash. I love the insights gained and relationships built at conferences. I love the opportunity to get on stage and share my expertise. I love being in person at these events! But I do not love the pile of lanyards and swag waste that these events generate. I just learned that the promotional swag industry is $64 billion worldwide. Most of it is cheaply made plastic, with a very short product life, likely made in facilities with poor working conditions. And most of it ends up in landfills. This waste has a huge environmental impact and leaves me with big questions about how I want to participate. I'm not here with answers. Just questions. I'm curious what you do with your lanyards after the conference? And how do you reckon with the swag waste? Do you think about it?
