I don’t want San Antonio to keep being a city where over 40% of families are unable to make ends meet. It's unconscionable, and it’s also unnecessary. We have tools to address economic hardship. The housing crisis is pushing out the very people who built and sustained this city. Teachers, service workers, and families who are at the heart of Austin are being priced out. According to the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) House Price Index (FHFA HPI?), U.S. house prices rose 6.6 percent over the last year. This sad reality has a significant impact on the safety and well-being of our community members. Everyone deserves a place to call home and a warm place to lay their head at night. That’s why I’m deeply committed to propelling affordable housing initiatives. One project we’re developing will have 50% affordable units to ensure that the people who power this city can actually afford to live here. Another is a safe house for women in crisis. My passion for affordable housing is a commitment to protecting the diversity and resilience that makes Austin special. Housing is not just a market—it's a human right. Spotlight on Richmond’s housing crisis: As co-director of the Wilder School RVA Eviction Lab at Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Ben Teresa's research reveals that our city has one of the highest eviction rates in the nation. In 2023, Richmond landlords filed 12,816 eviction cases, executing 2,849 — a 22% execution rate. The RVA Eviction Lab analyzes eviction data and advocates for tenant protections through projects like the Virginia Evictors Catalog. It provides critical insights to help shape fair housing policies and support vulnerable renters. With Richmond's long-declared housing crisis, Dr. Teresa’s data-driven approach demonstrates the need for local investment in affordable housing and stronger renter protections. Check out this freshly released housing study. It’s about Tennessee but the issues discussed in it are relevant everywhere. Most of America is facing the issue of housing affordability and many Americans are questioning whether the American dream is still within reach. Saddest quote in the study - “Everyone needs a home—but in the current housing market, many Tennesseans might never be able to afford one.” I uploaded the 139 page report for your information from the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR). Some of the solutions in the study are controversial and very debatable but certainly worthy of discussion. In partnership with Our Path Home and the City of Boise, Idaho Policy Institute recently completed its fifth year of evaluation of the New Path Community Housing. A 40-unit, single-site, Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) program, New Path uses a Housing First approach. How Do We Fix Housing? A question whose time has come. Last week, I had the privilege of spending an insightful evening with Krys Boyd and Malcolm Gladwell at Highland Park United Methodist Church (shoutout to Interabang Books for making it happen). The conversation around?Revenge of the Tipping Point?was as compelling as you’d imagine—but one moment stopped me in my tracks. Malcolm Gladwell stated that?housing is the next big problem we must solve. That single thought lingered with me. Housing—more than just shelter—represents stability, opportunity, and equity. So, where do we even begin? Malcolm, here’s my call to action: Provide us with a prompt, a starting point, and let’s chip away at this monumental challenge together. To everyone else reading this: What’s?your?take? What bold ideas, unconventional solutions, or small experiments could move the needle on this issue? The time to ask, imagine, and act is now.
