I was wiping my kitchen counter when I noticed my food processor downright grimy. Ugh. I felt annoyed. I ASSUMED my cleaning person was cleaning it. I EXPECTED she would be wiping the appliance each visit. I quickly realized this was all my fault. Did I provide clear direction? No. Did I ask what she was going to do? No. Did I ask what questions she had? No. I showed her the cleaning supplies, and told her to shout if she needed something. Then I put my headphones on to work. I didn’t communicate EXPECTATIONS clearly. I ASSUMED she magically understood what I wanted. I made myself unapproachable and didn’t bother to check on her. Maybe she felt confused or uncomfortable. I had no idea. I didn’t ask. This was my tiny kitchen, so stakes were low. Have you made these mistakes with your teams? I know I have. If you’re in healthcare, construction or aviation—or another industry where lives are on the line, how you work with your teams can have drastic impact. Here are three tactics to ensure success: 1. Provide clear and specific instruction about WHAT is to be completed. 2. Have your team share their perceptions of the task. This can highlight hidden assumptions without calling people out. Thank them for sharing. 3. Ask “What is still unclear?” This creates safety for someone to speak up. Thank your team for speaking up. This process takes time and interaction. As the leader, you need to: 1. Budget enough time. Conversations always take longer than planned. 2. Meet face to face or via video-conference. Watch body language and facial expressions that indicate something is wrong, not clear, or not being said. Get everyone’s voice in the room. 3. Budget time for check-ins. Spending time can help you avoid issues on the backend. Ask: “What has been completed? What challenges are you having? What questions can I answer? What support can I provide?” Leading teams is one of the hardest parts of being a leader. I know. I’ve been there. If you’re struggling with your team, I can help. Top 5 things I don’t miss about work: 1. Emails - Between 300 and 600 per day. Cc’d? Half of them, why? 2. Meetings - “Where minutes are taken and hours are lost.”. Initiative to end meetings in 50 min instead of 60? = Fail, always 3. Process as a goal or milestone. If I have to explain that one, I would have to explain common sense. 4. 17 number one priorities. In the real world, I can’t hold up any more than one finger and still mean one 5. Non-rowers on the skulling team account for 50% of the team. You know who they are … WHAT ARE YOUR TOP FIVE? Peace and good luck keeping your red stapler safe!
