?? Big news for Queens residents: mandatory composting is coming! Starting this October, NYC will implement a citywide mandatory composting program. Free Compost Bins: Residents of Manhattan, Bronx, and Staten Island can order a free compost bin from the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) online until October 28. Brooklyn and Queens residents, who were able to order bins earlier, can now purchase additional or replacement bins if needed. How to Get Your Free Bin? Order Online: Available until October 28, 2024. What Can Be Composted? Items like food scraps, yard waste, and food-soiled paper are all compostable. Properly separating your compost will help reduce waste and turn these materials into renewable energy or compost for gardens. Fines for non-compliance will begin in spring 2025. Mayor Adams and Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch emphasized that composting fights rats and benefits the planet. Get your bin now, and be prepared for the changes coming to Queens! Access to reliable processing infrastructure remains a primary challenge of operating successfully in the compost industry. While the demand for compost facilities is steadily increasing, the progress on creating this critical infrastructure is slow. Now more than ever, we are seeing a need to invest and support the scaling of industrial facilities, just as we saw a need 13 years ago to develop hauling and logistic capabilities. Across the cities we operate in, we have been intentional about building strong relationships with great processing partners that operate at high standards. In cities where this infrastructure does not exist, we have set out to build it ourselves. We have operated our own 5-acre Class II Compost Facility in Douglas County, Georgia since 2017. Developing this facility included creating a shared language to help community stakeholders and public entities understand the importance of organic recycling infrastructure and support policy and zoning efforts to make #compost infrastructure easier to develop. As more funding opportunities become available, prioritizing scalable processing infrastructure is going to be a critical part of the long term success of food waste diversion programs. Furthermore, there is tremendous opportunity to consider how compost can play a role in building more #circular and #regenerative local systems, and keep resources and meaningful jobs in our communities. At Lovell we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and enhancing social value. One of the key aspects of this commitment is reducing the amount of waste generated by our construction activities and sending less waste to landfill. To celebrate #ZeroWasteWeek we spotlight how Lovell has achieved a 35% reduction in waste intensity and an overall 99% landfill diversion rate in 2023, this is a increase of 2.85% from 2019. This means that Lovell has generated less waste per unit of output and sent less waste to landfill, exceeding the Construction 2025 target of 50% waste to landfill reduction by 2024, compared to 2008 levels. Recycling wastewater, once seen as an option of last resort, has for many communities evolved into a necessary practice. But tapping into this renewable, locally managed, and drought resistant water supply also requires substantial community engagement and partnership. Better water data and analytics are key. Join Dr. Clive Lipchin, Director of our Center for Transboundary Water Management, at this webinar next Tuesday, February 6th, by the Internet of Water Coalition discussing the role of water data in supporting water reuse. This webinar will highlight two examples of data-driven, water recycling partnership in water scarce regions. Following these use cases, a panel discussion will explore the role of water data in meeting local needs and address the potential of water reuse to address global scarcity challenges. This afternoon, I sat in the T-Rex building in downtown St. Louis in a fantastic collaboration coordinated by OneSTL. The topic was food waste. I love a solid sustainable food systems conversation, and this one did not disappoint! However, my brain kept meandering over to vacant lots and soil remediation because I can't help myself. I am always thinking about vacant lots and all the possibilities! Most of the food waste in STL is residential. So, if we start a household composting program, and we collect some great compost material, and we let all of those beautiful microbes make beautiful compost...what if we use the compost on the vacant lots? What changes would we see in the soil? Now I am eyeing my compost bin and the vacant lot next door. What other urban "problems" might also be urban ecosystem solutions? #urbanecosystems #foodwaste #sustainablefoodsystems

Los Angeles multifamily buildings are set to receive an unexpected new green initiative. The city council voted 11 to 0 in favor of establishing the LA Organic Composting Incentive Program. This program aims to help freestanding restaurants and multifamily housing units recycle and dispose of organic waste. This program will be mandatory for many of the multifamily housing units in Los Angeles. It follows a California law enacted two years ago that requires food waste to be kept out of landfills. With food waste making up 20% of landfill trash, this is a significant effort. The challenge will be ensuring tenants comply and that the organic waste is handled properly without causing issues in multifamily housing units. How do you see this playing out? Impactful or unnecessary to force this on operators? #Sustainability #OrganicWaste #Composting #LAHousing #EnvironmentalImpact

With a new government in Queensland could we see a new approach for funding/grant arrangements in the waste and recycling game??I have long argued that the current grant funding process often tends to favour some local governments with poor previous practices (non-compliant) and marginal projects with little chance of commercial survival once the initial funding has been exhausted.?There have been some very good projects but not all. I would suggest that market-led proposals process be re-investigated.??This would allow the private sector to secure some certainty over feedstock and an opportunity for the business to invest.?? The drain on the public purse could be reduced, but much work would be needed to ensure a fair system. ?Having said it's a concept that has been successfully implemented elsewhere Happy to hear your thoughts 0431 222 327???#circulareconomy #resourcerecovery #recycling #environment #sustainability #foodwaste #infrastructure #waste #wastemanagement #foodwaste #organicwaste #plasticrecycling

As “Nature’s Climate Champion,” compost reduces methane waste from landfills, adds carbon to soil, and manages water infiltration in landscapes. During the annual International Compost Awareness Week, we are reminded of the critical role compost plays in restoring local environments, building a greener future, and providing jobs, recycling opportunities and healthier crops. Without compost, Naturcycle would not exist. Our soil blends, green roof media, and other products are dependent on the great partnerships we have built. As this year’s ICAW concludes, we would like to recognize one of our composting partners, the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority. Their two facilities in northern New Jersey have excellent operators and make consistent high-quality compost. One site is enrolled in the US Composting Council’s Seal of Testing Assurance Program, and one site produces an Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) Listed compost product. We are proud to recognize the MCMUA today, as well as our other great partners throughout the Northeast for their excellent work!
