Let's talk about something fundamental in Employee Relations: Consistency. Whenever you face an ER issue, the first question to ask is: "Has this situation happened before, and how was it handled?" Why is this important? Because inconsistency in handling similar situations can lead straight to discrimination claims. It's not just about following a rulebook—it's about treating everyone equitably. But here's where it gets interesting: Consistency doesn't mean rigidity. Just because something was handled a certain way before, doesn't mean it was handled correctly. If it was wrong then, don’t repeat it now. And if circumstances differ, adapt. The goal is to be fair, not robotic. We must ensure past mistakes are corrected and each case is treated with the nuance it deserves. True consistency lies in fairness, not in blindly repeating the past.
