A recent report from the DoD Inspector General has revealed that the US Navy’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft is plagued by numerous operational deficiencies, with a total of 141 issues currently unaddressed. The report indicates that approximately 45% of these deficiencies are considered critical or serious, threatening the aircraft's ability to successfully execute its missions and potentially compromising military readiness and national security. For instance, some of the identified issues involve the locking mechanism of crew seats during carrier landings and visibility obstacles on tracking displays that hinder the crew's situational awareness. The report emphasizes that these operational shortcomings have persisted despite the Navy's significant investment of $22 billion to acquire a total of 80 E-2D aircraft, of which 62 have already been fielded. In response to the IG's findings, the Navy has acknowledged the need for improvement and agreed to implement the recommendations to establish a centralized system for tracking deficiencies and develop a comprehensive corrective action plan. Polish Air Force has received the second Saab 340AEW aircraft from Sweden, completing a key contract aimed at enhancing early warning and command functions. The Polish Armament Agency announced this milestone, marking the fulfillment of a contract signed in July 2023. Valued at approximately EUR 52 million, this deal underscores Poland’s commitment to modernizing its defense infrastructure amidst evolving regional security dynamics. The Saab 340AEW aircraft, a Swedish airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) platform, is a pivotal addition to Poland’s defense arsenal. These aircraft are designed to provide advanced surveillance capabilities, crucial for early detection and tracking of potential threats. By integrating these aircraft into its defense network, Poland aims to significantly improve its situational awareness and command efficacy. The Saab 340AEW is equipped with the PS-890 AESA radar system, part of the Erieye family. This radar system is renowned for its ability to track multiple targets, including ships, planes, and missiles, at ranges of up to 250 miles (400 kilometers). Operating at an altitude of 20,000 feet (6,100 meters), the radar can effectively scan a 120-degree arc on either side of the aircraft, although it has a limited coverage zone directly behind and in front of the plane. The introduction of the Saab 340AEW aircraft is expected to play a crucial role in Poland’s national defense strategy over the next decade. These aircraft are projected to remain operational for about ten years, during which Poland plans to procure new aircraft of a similar class. This proactive approach ensures that Poland’s early warning and command capabilities will continue to evolve, maintaining a robust defense posture. The advanced radar capabilities of the Saab 340AEW provide a significant edge over traditional systems. Unlike the circular radar used in AWACS planes like the E-3 Sentry, the non-movable PS-890 radar offers lower drag, enhancing the aircraft’s operational efficiency. L3Harris is on pace to equip the U.S. Navy’s F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet aircraft with the most advanced electronic warfare (ADVEW) technologies available, helping keep naval aviators ahead of emerging threats and out of harm’s way for years to come. The company recently conducted Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for ADVEW system prototype, designed to provide F/A-18 jets with state-of-the-art countermeasures to complete their mission in an environment where threats and adversaries are becoming more sophisticated. We’re now aiming for Prototype System Integration Lab Testing this summer. This PDR latest milestone is part of a $80 million contract with the U.S. Navy, and builds on L3Harris’ two-decade legacy of delivering advanced EW systems to the F/A-18. L3Harris’ EW solutions area already successfully integrated on today’s F/A-18. L3Harris integrated defensive electronic countermeasures (IDECM) AN/ALQ-214 on-board jammer (OBJ) helps protect the aircraft and crews against advanced radio frequency (RF) threats and sophisticated integrated air defense systems.
