It was a privilege to highlight the Texas approach this week at the largest university-hosted cleantech conference in the United States. The Texas approach includes making sure utilities have the tools and processes needed to bring cleantech projects to market at the speed of business. Tools like cutting in half the regulatory approval timeline for new transmission lines, and having an even more efficient process than that for connecting new load or generation to the grid when it’s very close to existing infrastructure. Left this impressive conference uplifted by the broad consensus around the need for speed, scale, and simplicity for the competitive sustainability and resilience of Europe’s manufacturing base. The ramp up of capital-intensive cleantech manufacturing is tricky, and the government has an important role in enabling the long-term framework conditions that catalyze the needed private investment. It is cheaper to keep an industry in Europe in the first place than to attempt to reshore it once it has been lost, so the implementation of non-price criteria in auctions and public procurement calls will be key, among other things - we need to find the right balance between cheap, good, and fair. The EU is getting serious about how to decarbonize each sector and what it will take to get there - exploring avenues to support projects, such as the Sovereignty Seal, Auctions-as-a-Service, and new blended finance products such as public counter-guarantees to address working capital needs of cleantech manufacturing scale up. Today in Brussels, at the Cleantech for Europe Summit 2024, we officially joined the Cleantech Scale-up Coalition alongside ten cleantech innovators. “We are thrilled to see Atlas Agro joining the Cleantech Scale-up Coalition. Cleantech for Europe Summit proved the cleantech industry stands ready to power Europe’s competitiveness, but we urgently need a comprehensive industrial, competition, and trade policy to match our global peers. The Scale-up Coalition plays a vital role to equip policymakers with experiences from the field and inform Europe’s strategy,” said Jules Besnainou, Executive Director, Cleantech for Europe. Our CEO, Petter ?stb? was on hand for the induction ceremony saying, "We are grateful for the opportunity to join the Scale-up Coalition, which brings together climate companies with members of the European Parliament and financiers to ensure climate businesses succeed in Europe, and that Europe succeeds with climate business." While Europe is well-equipped to finance new early-stage technologies, both public and private capital are lacking when it comes to industrializing these technologies at climate-relevant scale. Working closely with its Investor and Scale-up Coalitions, Cleantech for Europe bridges the gap between cleantech and policy leaders with the aim of ushering in a new era of European industrial leadership.
