I am thrilled to introduce Digital Threads, a project developed by our team of Information and Communications Engineering (ICE) students. Our mission is to establish community Wi-Fi hotspots in public spaces, with a special emphasis on underserved areas that lack reliable internet access. Through this initiative, we aim to bridge the digital divide while advancing two key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 4 (Quality Education). In our video, we highlight the transformative impact of Digital Threads—enhancing connectivity and fostering stronger community bonds. We are happy to announce that YETI's Claire Gallacher won the Open Data Camp hackathon, hosted by Smart Systems Hub. Claire Gallacher (Research assistant & PhD candidate at the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development.) and Nils Aldag (CEO of Sunfire) are driven by a common goal: Safeguarding our planet. Claire has dedicated the past 3.5 years to addressing heat-related challenges. This event offered her a fresh source of inspiration and innovative ideas. Representing both the Leibniz-Institut für ?kologische Raumentwicklung e. V. (I?R) and YETI Dresden, Claire proudly wore her academic and entrepreneurial hats. “Winning first prize in the innovation/social benefit category with team HiRo for our climate adaptation decision-making tool was just an added bonus.” Participating in events like this is a significant step forward and a validation of her concepts. She found it fascinating to observe how other teams approached the challenge using open data. Following Claire's approach of going out, representing, and testing your ideas with diverse audiences is a fast track to iterating and prototyping more efficiently. By attracting more attention and engaging more minds, you unlock opportunities for valuable feedback and improvement. DLD 2025: Reflecting on Two Decades of Transformation While Building Bridges for the Future Standing here at the 25th-anniversary edition of #DLD, it’s impossible not to feel the electricity in the air—a gathering of minds with a shared vision to create a future that is brighter, smarter, and more humane. Having had the privilege of attending for the past 20 years, this conference feels like a time capsule of innovation, where ideas once considered moonshots are now cornerstones of our global reality. Back in 2017, I reflected critically on Scott Galloway's keynote, which, while insightful, overlooked the emerging might of non-Western innovation. Eight years later, the agenda makes one thing clear: innovation knows no borders, and China, along with other global players, has undeniably reshaped the narrative. This year’s lineup celebrates a mosaic of perspectives—from AI reshaping industrial automation to the intersections of technology and biodiversity—proving that inclusivity breeds resilience. Today's discussions kick off with Bj?rn Ommer exploring the new frontier of foundation models and Werner Vogels highlighting how tech can drive positive change. Yet, as I weave through this robust program, I am reminded that innovation must come with responsibility. Sessions like "The AI Dilemma" and "How to Reclaim Humanity from Tech"underscore the importance of grounding progress in ethical frameworks. As we tackle topics from agentic AI to quantum meets AI, the theme is clear: our world is at a tipping point, balancing utopia and dystopia. Let us remain cautious, not out of fear but with a determination to lead responsibly. After all, my motto remains steadfast: "Believing in a bright future and our ability to build it together." To all change-makers here today, may our shared optimism light the path forward, and may our caution ensure we don’t lose sight of the human heart that must anchor every innovation.
