“Every lesson I learned as a kid was at the dinner table. Being Greek, Sicilian and Ruthenian - we are an emotional bunch. It is where we laughed, cried, and yelled - but most importantly, where we bonded and connected.” - Michael Symon (American chef) When choosing furniture items for the families we serve, it is not a matter of just checking off boxes and giving them whatever we have in the workshop. We want our beneficiaries to be proud of the furniture in their homes, for the items to pair well together and complement each other. Since we receive many items not in sets but individually, it is up to our team and volunteers to refinish them in a way that brings them together. This solid wood table came to us worn, scratched, and without matching chairs. We had multiple chairs with similarly turned wood legs, making them a possible match. After sanding down the tabletop and applying stain and sealant to highlight the natural beauty of the wood, the base, legs, and chairs were all painted black to bring the set together. (we opted not to include the weird, unnecessary 5th leg that the table came with ??) This set was recently delivered to a refugee family of four from Afghanistan through our amazing partners at the Diocese of Olympia Refugee Resettlement Office, along with a couch, lighting, and other furniture pieces. We hope these items provide them comfort and a place to gather as a family in their new home. Thank you to all our mighty volunteers who helped bring these pieces back to life! #dinnertable #refugeesupport #furniturerestoration #volunteerseattle #seattlevolunteer #reducewaste

St. Thomas’ Church is one of the oldest churches within Montgomery County, dating back to 1698. The historic cemetery includes the graves of 12 veterans from the Revolutionary War. CVDA developed the master plan for the restoration of the approximately 42-acre site that included the sanctuary, historic supportive buildings including a school site, the historic cemetery, nature preserve, and community garden. One of the key challenges was upgrading the antiquated circulation and parking system to be ADA compliant while maintaining and enhancing the historic setting. The master plan improved site visibility of the sanctuary, accessibility, and wayfinding; introduced stormwater infiltration in the parking lot; established a community garden and nature preserve; created new community athletic fields; and provided for overall landscape maintenance and restoration to enhance the historic setting of the church property. The first phase included the development of a new main entrance that improved safety, stormwater management and wayfinding. #historicchurches #masterplan #wayfinding #stormwatermanagement

Creating a welcoming worship space for all members is crucial. (especially for those with mobility challenges) A common concern we hear is from individuals accustomed to using pews for support instead of armchairs when standing. Switching to armchairs can seem daunting, as it requires using different muscles to push up from the arms rather than pulling from the front. However, it’s important to know that pulling oneself up from an object in front can lead to injuries. Our chairs are designed with accessibility in mind, helping members transition to a safer and more comfortable way of getting up. Experts predict there are benefits of using arm support instead of relying on objects in front. Bertolini's chairs are not only accessible but also cost-effective and space-efficient, making them ideal for small churches with limited resources. You can get Bertolini chairs with or without arms to accommodate the accessibility needs of your congregation. Our seating solutions maximize space without compromising on accessibility, ensuring a comfortable and safe experience for all members. Trust Bertolini to support your congregation with seating that meets the highest standards of accessibility and comfort. #AccessibleWorship #InclusiveSeating #WelcomingSpaces #MobilityFriendly #ChurchSeating #BertoliniChairs

?? Collaboration at its best! together we always achieve more ?? St Peters Church, Ipswich is situated in the middle of a large estate and is at the heart of the community. Edith Mason (Community Connector) identified there was an opportunity for the church to support the community better if it had a fully functional kitchen where they could offer hot food and drinks and a warm welcome space. ? Supported and coordinated by Operations Manager Phillip Turner and Emily Scott Assoc. CIPD several Sanctuary suppliers were contacted, Rexel, Magnet, Travis Perkins Managed Services plus contractors AP Construction, Top Flight Electric to see if they would support in completely renovating the kitchen. ? They all agreed, and only 3 weeks later, there was a brand new, shiny, fit for purpose kitchen completed, that will support the local community and how brilliant to see that all the hard work by those above has supported so many and is a real hub of the community. ? ‘Having a kitchen, we can use to prepare food from will transform what we are able to do to support the community. Up until now we have been limited to cold pre-packaged food. Now we can serve warm soup, cook meals and we are planning on starting cooking and baking classes. ? We care about the whole person at St peters and now with the kitchen we can do that better. Thank you so much for transforming this tired underused space into something that will benefit a lot of people’ (Reverend Mervyn, St Peters Church, Ipswich) #communityengagement #socialvaluematters #supplychain #procurementwithpurpose see less
It’s important to us to help create strong communities in areas where we have homes. At St Peter’s Church in Ipswich, we’ve worked with our suppliers to fund and fit a brand new kitchen that has become a lively hub for the local community. Watch our video to hear our residents talk about the practical and emotional support that the church has been able to offer thanks to the expanded kitchen. ? https://lnkd.in/eqHSaj-4

In 1939, a photograph by Russell Lee from the Farm Security Administration offers an intimate look into the makeshift living conditions of a family near Sallisaw, Oklahoma, in Sequoyah County. ?? The image focuses on the corner of their kitchen within a tent home, capturing the humble, often precarious realities of life during the Great Depression. A tent home, while providing shelter, was far from the comfort and security that most Americans would expect in the era, particularly as the nation slowly pulled itself from the economic depths of the 1930s. ??? In this scene, the kitchen is modestly equipped, with everyday tools of survival and the basics for cooking—likely a stark contrast to the modern, spacious kitchens we often associate with comfort today. The juxtaposition of a tent home with kitchen necessities speaks volumes about resilience and adaptation in the face of hardship. ?? The photo is a testament to the families who, despite being displaced and living in such temporary, precarious homes, continued to make do with what they had. It's a humbling reminder that the "American Dream" was often achieved under the most trying conditions, with a good measure of grit, determination, and—let's face it—more than a little creative problem-solving. In many ways, this image captures not just a moment in history, but the unspoken truth: when life hands you a tent, you build a kitchen. ?? #OklahomaHistory #GreatDepression #FarmSecurityAdministration #RussellLee #TentLiving #Sallisaw #SequoyahCounty #Resilience #HistoricalPhotography #KitchenInTheGreatDepression #CreativeSurvival #AmericanHistory

Did you know, disputes about trees, hedges and fences are the most common things neighbours fall out about? ????but my advice is, always try and speak to your neighbours before you take any action. ??yes you can trim overhanging branches on your side, but don’t cut ties with your neighbours in the process. ??it’s always better to try and maintain good neighbourly relations (even though I do love a good neighbour dispute!!) If you do need assistance with any neighbour issues do get in touch. #neighbourly #propertydisputes #treewars

Ruh-roh. Cracks in the brick on the exterior of your home are usually not a good sign. However, it's important to address it promptly so as to prevent any further damage if it is a foundation issue. Foundation repairs can get costly especially if you put them off for a long time and the damage continues to spread. So take a walk around the house every so often, smell the roses, and check for cracks! #foundationrepair #charlottecrawlspace #charlottefoundationrepair #raleighfoundationrepair #brickdamage #foundationissues

I'm currently reading the 2006 book, "The Architecture of Happiness" by Alain de Botton. I highly recommend it. It's a personal look at how design/architecture connects us to our emotions -- namely happiness and misery. It's particularly poignant in light of the fires in and around Los Angeles and the devastation so many have experienced. Many of the recent news reels I've watched on social media are about one's connection to the house, the home, they lost. Their home was everything to them -- memories made there, the life lived there, the photos, mementos, the windows, doors, floors, and more. Many recounted how they had renovated and remodeled the house, preserved a historic house, and, with profound grief, acknowledged that their work, real intense creative work, was reduced to rubble in a matter of hours. It reminds me of some of the passages in Botton's book. One of the sentiments from the book that sticks with me is the act of noticing how sunlight hits the walls or floors of a house's interior and the beauty that light brings to the surface -- the color of the wood, the hue of a tiled floor. This is not to say, however, that everyone loves where they live or live there because they think it's beautiful. It's not necessary to honor the play of sunlight or value interior colors or be in awe of exterior landscapes. Homes are more than their designs. They are places of shelter and refuge, examples of hard work, a necessity. Yet all those who have suffered loss from these fires were familiar with their neighborhoods, the trees that lined the streets, the vegetation at the intersections, the local retailers they frequented, the crosswalks -- everything they saw and did daily that is now gone. Community has been lost. They were drawn to the neighborhood they lived in or the neighborhood became, over time, as familiar as a friend. There are many in need of help in southern California.
