Nornickel inaugurates new battery R&D centre in Saint Petersburg Nornickel launched the Battery Technology Centre in Saint Petersburg, a state-of-the-art R&D facility, marking an important step in the development of our EV technology strategy. The Battery Technology Centre will oversee research into the use of cathode active materials.? Lithium-ion batteries, including those used in electric vehicles, are charged and discharged as lithium ions flow between the anode, which contains graphite, and the nickel-containing cathode.? Nickel delivers a high level of energy density, increasing the range of the EV. The current focus of R&D efforts is on the NMC 811 battery, which is composed of 80% nickel, 10% cobalt and 10% manganese. The next stage will be a pilot facility for the production of 10 tonnes of cathode active materials per year, while a fully-fledged enterprise capable of producing 10,000 tonnes per year is in the pipeline. The new R&D centre is part of an effort to build domestic capabilities for a full cycle of power battery production. It is also part of Nornickel’s broader mission to build new technologies that contribute to the energy transition, including in cooperation with domestic and international partners. DYK: California’s Lithium Valley is home to vast deposits of rare metals? That’s right – enough to power more than 375 million electric vehicle batteries, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). In order to extract lithium, specific infrastructure and workforce training is necessary. Tackling this is SDSU Imperial Valley and University of California, Riverside, who have partnered up after a $500K Tech Hubs Strategy Grant was awarded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration to develop Imperial Valley as a center for electrification and prepare the workforce for a green economy. Here is a look at numbers that no one is talking about: Provincial and Federal governments are putting billions of dollars into EV batteries plants. Studies name a range of 30–55?kWhprod per kWhcell of battery cell when considering only the factory production and excluding the material mining and refining. This means that with a conservative estimate it will require 1.8TWh to power the NorthVolt plant south of Montreal. To put this in perspective this is the entire Romaine-3 powerstation, or 105,000 homes total energy use for a year! Unfortunately, there are no big electricity generation projects in the table. Today, FREYR reported 4th quarter and 2023 full year financial results. Over the past quarter, we've reached several key operational and technical milestones, including the just-announced successful automated anode casting trials with active anode slurry. We are now advancing towards the expected start of functional cell production for customer samples using the full automation of our Customer Qualification Plant in H1 2024. We redomiciled to the U.S. and our progress at the CQP will help to support our U.S. Department of Energy Title 17 loan application for Giga America. The Georgia Gigafactory is expected to generate hundreds of jobs in Coweta County and the surrounding areas. We’ve established the FREYR 2.0 growth initiative, which encompasses the pursuit of five major opportunities tied to distinct projects, using either the SemiSolid platform or conventional technology and totaling 100 GWh+ of production capacity in the U.S. and Europe. Goodenough at Oxford University. He introduced lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) as a new cathode material, which dramatically increased the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, paving the way for modern battery technology. In 1982, Michael Thackeray at the University of Texas made another game-changing contribution with manganese-based spinel (LiMn2O4), a safer alternative that improved battery stability and reliability. Lyten planning $1B lithium-sulfur battery gigafactory in Nevada, up to 10 GWh per year: The facility will be located near Reno, Nevada, with the capability to produce up to 10 GWh of batteries annually at full scale. Lyten’s Lithium-Sulfur cells feature high energy density, which the company reports will enable up to 40% lighter weight than lithium-ion and 60% lighter weight than lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The cells are fully manufactured in the U.S. and use local materials, eliminating the need for mined minerals such as nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite. Lyten claims that the use of low-cost, local materials makes their lithium-sulfur batteries a lower-cost alternative to lithium-ion at scale. Hithium Tech USA Inc. has announced plans to invest $100 million in a new 483,874-square-foot battery module and system assembly facility in Mesquite, Texas.
