The EU CO2 emission mandate for new car sales is not about protecting industry, but an achievable pathway to minimise existential threat. Of course it can be done, albeit with (potentially) slightly lower profits.
?? All manufacturers met the EU CO2 emission targets in 2023 for new passenger cars, according to preliminary data from the European Environmental Agency. ??? #CarCO2Targets On average, CO2 #emissions from new passenger cars decreased by 1.5%, marking a reduction of 1 g/km compared with 2022. ?? Manufacturers mainly achieved this by increasing the share of battery electric vehicles in their fleets.??? In total, 10.7 million new cars were sold in 2023, with average CO2 emissions of 107 g/km, measured by the Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). CO2 emissions of combustion engine vehicles largely remained unchanged over the past 2 years and the impact of eco-innovation technologies continues to be minimal. Should the EU delay its 2025 emissions targets for automakers? According to a draft proposal from the automotive industry lobby, the EU should push back its CO2 reduction goals by two years to avoid severe economic consequences. Automakers risk halting production of around 2 million cars or incurring fines of up to €13 billion for passenger cars and €3 billion for vans. The draft highlights the impact of low consumer demand for EVs and increased competition from non-EU manufacturers, which could lead to job losses, harm to consumers, and weaken EU competitiveness. Renault Group CEO and European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) President Luca de Meo has already voiced concerns about the billions in fines manufacturers may face due to the current EV market slowdown.

The flood of bad news never ends for #LegacyAuto “#Automakers selling light commercial vehicles in #Europe have no confidence they will be able to hit the #EuropeanUnion’s tough new #CO2 reduction targets for 2025 as sales of #electric vans continue to fall.” What also does not end is the #gaslighting by the same industry that taught customers to hate #EV’s. No wonder many #Europeans do not want #EVs. “Renault, Ford, Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen have launched or are in the process of launching electric versions of their most popular diesel vans.” ?In the process of launching”? What’s wrong with them? Only now the are launching? Now that they are about to fall off the precipice? They’ve known about these delayed deadlines for so long! Instead of preparing, they gaslit and invested in fantasy technology like #Hydrogen and #eFuels! #Stellanti #Mercedes #BMW #Volkswagen #Audi #Fird #GM #Renault

The European Commission recently came out with an official report to compare real-world car emissions with their test values and the results are quite shocking: Hybrid vehicles emit 3,5x more CO2 than what is publicly disclosed from tests, making them practically just as bad as ICE vehicles! Fine if a hybrid works better for you, but we need to stop claiming that hybrids are good for the environment, once and for all.

Transport & Environment (T&E) - "‘Absurd’ car industry demands the EU triggers crisis clause" 'EU lawmakers must reject the absurd demands of car manufacturers to invoke a crisis clause to delay emissions targets, Transport & Environment (T&E) has said. In a?leaked paper (https://lnkd.in/ewYWzRtY), the European car industry association ACEA calls on the EU Commission to resort to Article 122 in the EU treaties – last used for the Ukraine war and the Covid pandemic – to delay the 2025 car CO2 targets by two years. Julia Poliscanova (she/her), senior director for vehicles and emobility supply chains at T&E, said:?“This is cynical and absurd. Carmakers made over €130 billion in profits in the last two years and had years to prepare for the target. Now they want the EU to declare a state of emergency so they can continue selling dirty cars and making large profits. This is not a war or a pandemic, but a self serving stunt.'
