Studies show that air pollution contributed to 20% of diabetes-related mortality in 2019. The good news is that green spaces are linked to lower mortality rates for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes. Green spaces offer numerous health benefits, including the ability to exercise in less-polluted or unpolluted air. My Diabetes Tutor’s (MDT) Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support program promotes a healthy lifestyle for patients with diabetes. The telehealth support provided by MDT’s education specialists stresses the importance of exercise, good nutrition, and green spaces. In the study by WHO Regional Office for Europe, progress towards five global diabetes targets in Finland was evaluated. Data used cames from the National Diabetes Registry (Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL)). The Finnish experience illustrates the possibility of utilizing existing electronic health records to create a national diabetes registry with timely, representative and rich data. The Finnish experience – supplementing registry data with health examination survey data – shows that it can be necessary to combine data sources to measure all the targets (awareness of diabetes and blood pressure levels). #diabetes #indicators #healthdata #register #survey https://lnkd.in/dbRj6sNb

Did you know that globally, an estimated 422 million adults were living with diabetes in 2024, compared to 108 million in 1980? The prevalence has nearly doubled, rising from 4.7% to 8.5% in adults, with risk factors like being overweight or obese playing a major role. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, and lower limb amputation—but it doesn’t have to be. Through a healthy diet, physical activity, and avoiding tobacco, type 2 diabetes can often be prevented or delayed. Treatment and regular screening can also help manage the disease and its complications. On 14 November, we observe World Diabetes Day to promote global efforts in improving health, access to treatment, and healthcare education. Let’s work together to raise awareness and fight diabetes. #WorldDiabetesDay #DiabetesAwareness #HealthMatters #PreventDiabetes #GlobalHealth #HealthyLiving

The true potential in predictive analytics for a healthy society is not only in forseeing future health problems, but allowing communities to take proactive steps to prevent them, such as the implementation of community outreach programs. Armed with insights into potential health trends, healthcare professionals can engage with communities, providing tailored education and resources. For example, if the data indicates a rise in diabetes risk factors, outreach efforts may include diabetes prevention workshops, nutritional counseling, and accessible screenings within the affected community.

There’s no doubt our environment is impacting the number of people with diabetes. A study by researchers in China showed that among type 2 diabetes patients, fine particulate matter PM2.5 exposure had the strongest association with mortality due to peripheral vascular disease. The good news is that green spaces are linked to lower mortality rates for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes.
