When recruiting for startups, I often ask candidates a specific question to gauge their sense of ownership: "Tell me about a time when you took the initiative on a project, even though it wasn't explicitly assigned to you." This question helps me identify people who are proactive, think critically, and are willing to go above and beyond - essential qualities in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment. This ownership mentality sets high-performing teams apart. Rather than just completing tasks, these individuals bring a sense of commitment, problem-solving, and forward-thinking that startups need to scale. I have been working with a few SaaS startups over the last quarter to help them hire within different aspects of their Go-to-market teams. One common theme with all these clients has been how important the GTM team is to their success. Many clients emphasize that these hires are critical to their long term success and they can't afford to get it wrong. That feels like a lot of pressure, so what is the key to hiring GTM roles for SaaS startups? One thing I have found is that its about a lot more than the skillset of the position. With a growing company I cannot emphasize how important alignment is. Not everyone is meant to work in a startup environment, and not every startup is the same. Simply put: no two SaaS companies are the same. Every startup has a unique product, market, and vision—and the talent that works for one company might not be the right fit for another. A friend shared a job description with me this week for a SaaS startup in NYC that has a **6 day per week** in office requirement for almost all their open roles. According to the post, that could mean 12 hours in office per day some days. The application prompts you to select if that works for you, twice. I looked at their Glassdoor, and it seems the reviews confirm this is indeed their policy ?? I'm trying my best to be open minded here. The company is clearly hiring a lot of people, and their headcount has increased 5x in 2 years, so this policy must be working to some extent. Being super specific about your culture in a job application is a great way to at least weed out people who aren't on board for that, even if they don't agree with it. I'm sure for some people, if they feel strongly about the team, mission, or outcome, it could make sense to be this dedicated to your company. Is founder mode going too far?
