?? Support the Leaders of Impact! The American Heart Association's campaign, Leaders of Impact, is highlighting the importance of heart health. Did you know heart disease is the number one cause of death worldwide with strokes in second place? Together, we can do our part to educate our communities on the importance of heart health and warning signs of heart disease while raising money to help fund research. Join our CEO, Melissa, who's a part of Leaders of Impact nominee Nick Schellinger's team to raise $100,000 by December 4. Each of the nominees is raising money in the name of heart health. The nominee with the biggest impact will be named the 2024 National Leaders of Impact Winner. Be a part of the movement by making a difference. The beauty of this learning is that both partners have learning objectives. An authentic two way learn g experience.
In a show of global medical collaboration, our cardiovascular team recently welcomed two doctors from Howrah, India, to see how we provide high-quality, complex care that improves outcomes for children with heart anomalies. This was through our partnership with Children's HeartLink, a Twin Cities-based nonprofit dedicated to saving children’s lives by transforming pediatric heart care in underserved parts of the world. https://lnkd.in/gS_QNYFR

Powerful story of resilience and hope in the face of challenges. Eli's story, his journey with Stargardt disease, and the dedication of family and friends, remind us how personal connections drive support for life-changing research. This year, John's Boston Marathon run will directly fund the work of researchers focused on vision-restoring treatments, a cause that has impacted Eli’s life and so many others. Consider supporting this meaningful journey from Hopkinton to Boylston Street and straight into the lab. Every bit makes a real difference. #StargardtDisease #BostonMarathon #ResearchForACure"
It's disingenuous to say that events don't cross-pollinate between home and work. Especially when matters of health or our kids crop up. In 2012, my son was 7 years old and struggling to see the board in class. My husband and I are both nearsighted, as is his older sister. We figured it was simply Eli's turn. Unfortunately that was not the case. Eli was diagnosed with #stargardtdisease, an inherited retinal disease (IRD) that slowly robs the central vision of those affected. Before he had an official diagnosis, Eli sat in my lap (unlike a 7 y/o boy) and held my face between his hands. He was intently studying every bit of me, and something deep in my mother's psyche told me not to push him away or question anything. Imagine not being able to see the faces of those you love from any distance. I'm so glad I listened and let him try to make sense of things. Eli is now 20 and in college, where he's studying marketing, playing more video games and D&D than he probably should be, and generally thriving in a tight community of college brothers that are making their way through the struggles and successes of undergraduate education. To get him to this point, we've had oodles of TLC from Massachusetts Eye and Ear. Dr. Jason Comander is his IRD specialist, and keeps us informed of research that is on the horizon...there are finally phase 2 and 3 trials in the US for Stargardt. Maybe, just maybe one of these will be a good fit for Eli. That's always the hope. In order to get to the point of having trials and approved treatments to halt progression or provide a cure, it takes lots of money. Mass Eye and Ear has had a longstanding relationship with the Boston Marathon. My brother Paul Herrick ran in 2016, 2017 and 2020 and raised money for Dr Comander's research. I ran in 2019, and would still be toeing the line if I were able to run. At the moment, that isn't in the cards for me, but my friend John Pitzel is going to pick up where Paul and I have left off (for now) and run the 2025 Boston Marathon for Dr. Comander's research into Stargardt and other IRD. John is a veteran runner and also works in education. How bad can he be? #notbadatall lol Many of you have supported me and Paul over the years. I would humbly ask that you consider supporting John this year as he continues this vital work. When we saw Dr Comander this summer, he let us know that the money we had raised was tucked away in a corner for a rainy day. That day came this year, when between grants, the money MANY OF YOU donated was being used to fund the salaries of researchers in Dr Comander's lab. Real money supporting real scientists doing real work on a cure. I know there are a lot of places you can donate- but this one journeys from Hopkinton to Boylston St and drops right into a lab in Boston. That's pretty awesome! https://lnkd.in/eYyMdq7z

Come Walk With Us! On May 4th, A3Access Advisors will be joining the Moving Day Walk in San Francisco to show our support for the Parkinson’s Foundation and those patients and caregivers impacted by Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is very personal to me.?Twenty-five years ago, my father passed after a two-decade battle with this horrible disease.?It’s severely debilitating with no known cause, cure, or prevention.?Impacting nearly one million Americans and 10 million people worldwide, Parkinson’s is second only to Alzheimer’s as the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease. While there is great science focused on treating and hopefully one day curing Parkinson’s, we are not there yet. We must do more to accelerate our efforts to identify treatment alternatives. The Parkinson’s Foundation is committed to making the lives better for those at risk and suffering from Parkinson’s by advancing research, improving access to care, and funding community programs. Their efforts on behalf of Parkinson’s families deserve our support! I’m hoping you will join us in making a difference.?If you would like to join our team, or show your support, you can learn more here https://lnkd.in/ghP2QGA7.??

? Our voices deserve to be heard. Our life experiences deserve to be ACKNOWLEDGED and BELIEVED. What we have gone through has changed the people we are and that matters. We will not be silenced. Our lived experience has meaning. If we don’t share what we have been through, how it impacted us and what we have learned from it, how will others ever understand our life experience, our emotions, and our values, which have changed because of this trauma, this disease, this diagnosis, this experience. If we continue to be silenced, we will remain isolated and misunderstood. Sharing our stories helps deeper our connection with friends and family, and it helps them understand how we want to be treated so they are able to support us better. Sharing our stories helps the medical community understand our desired outcomes. What they think is an issue, isn’t always the issue that is impacting us the most. We don’t always need to be fixed, to be brought back to what is thought of as “normal”, sometimes we just need to be supported through the inevitable. Sharing our stories matters because it makes a difference. It says to other people who are going through the same thing, I understand what you are going through, I acknowledge your pain, your suffering, your fears. I acknowledge that you also feel joy, and love, and ?happiness, despite this horrible thing you are dealing with. You are not a victim. Sharing our stories is stepping up and saying this is my life. And by doing that you are saying to that other person out there, who is still hiding their journey, I see you. I have the unparalleled honour of collaborating with 25 amazing people from the rare disease community who have bravely said YES to sharing their stories and making an impact on other people’s lives. ?We are working as a group to raise the funds to publish their stories in a book which will be called Positively Rare. Please help us make this incredibly meaningful book come to life by donating to our GoFundMe page and/or sharing this post with your followers. https://gofund.me/0ba1f511 We are also looking for corporate sponsors for the book. If you know of any organizations that cares about the patient experience and want to connect with the rare disease community please send them our way. Thank you so much for you help.
