A recent article from The Nation, “A River of Deception,” sheds light on a pressing environmental and cultural conflict. For over a century, the City of Seattle has been at odds with the treaty rights of the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe, stemming from the construction of dams along the Skagit River. These dams, operated by Seattle’s City Light (SCL), have not only disrupted the river’s ecology but also the tribe’s ancestral practices. The obstruction of fish migrations and the submergence of sacred sites have deeply affected the tribe’s way of life, infringing upon rights guaranteed since 1855. As SCL seeks a new 50-year license, the situation underscores the need for a balanced approach that honors both our environmental responsibilities and the sovereign rights of Native American Tribes. The ongoing confidential negotiations involve a diverse group of stakeholders, including federal and state agencies, First Nations of Canada, and conservation groups. This case is a poignant reminder of the complexities in managing our natural resources and the importance of upholding the rights of all communities. After spending last week discussing and learning about getting the most out of our agricultural water in California this story shows what is possible when responsible restoration projects are put into action to remove obsolete infrastructure. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to the diverse group of stakeholders that depend on water in California. Strategies need to take into account the distinct differences in local hydrology in disparate parts of the state. Responsible use by domestic water agencies across the state is needed to ensure water is not wasted and sufficient supply exists to ensure the future of our Ag Industry as well as our magnificent wilderness areas. I believe Cal-Trout's tagline says it best. Fish - Water - People. I am hopeful we can continue to collaborate to find workable solutions, for urban, agricultural and ecological water needs.

This is quite a challenge, both for access and for rebuilding access. Many roads are simple gone, not just damaged, in the narrow valleys that make up so much much of the landscape of the southern Appalachians. Let’s revisit what happened last time, and why more investment in these leases is a costly mistake. In the first lease sale, here’s what Alaskans got for their investment: no bids from major oil companies, major banks and insurers refusing to finance Arctic drilling, and a multimillion-dollar loss with nothing to show for it. AIDEA’s push for another lease sale ignores public opinion and puts irreplaceable Arctic habitats, the critical caribou range, and areas sacred to the Gwich’in people at risk.
