It's probably not just me, but I've been thinking about misinformation more and more this week, which led me to looking at ways we can collectively combat it. (? 5 min watch ) https://lnkd.in/dZdAkQwN I played the 'Bad News*' game mentioned in the video, and learned about the following techniques: - Impersonation - Emotional Manipulation - Polarisation - Conspiracy - Discredit - Trolling With my security background, I'm used to the training on the various scams and methods that bad actors use to infiltrate networks. This is the same kind of thing, but rather than focus on one particular tactic (like phishing, SMS scams etc), these games put you in the place of a 'disinformation producer'. The effectiveness of these games is promising (https://lnkd.in/dR_6KNn5). Studies have shown that players find manipulative social media content less reliable after playing, and are less likely to share false information. While the effects may decay over time without “booster shots,” this approach offers a scalable solution to build psychological resistance against misinformation. Bada boom, another Hack The Box 'sherlock' done and relatively quick as well! This 'Jingle Bell' investigation wasn't the hardest thing in the world (Yes yes it's in the easy section) but was much different than what I'm used to! I almost never work with SQLite and snooping into message logs is mighty foreign to me. Alas a challenge is a challenge I tore through this one. Getting started and recalling the basics of SQL was just a breeze, scanning though huge blocks of XLM-like message blocks (Can't give away the application name since it's still active) was more challenging than I thought, looks like I'm celebrating cross-eyed! Once getting past the 'wall of text' problem, it was smooth sailing. Did have a hiccup on finding the timestamps (Bloody Epoch time) but that was the main roadblock with the smallest detour. Welp, it is yet another Friday, so I hope everyone has plans, and if you don't then I envy you! There's something about doing nothing that really resets the mind, look to the Danish and what they cooked up, niksen. Maybe someday I'll practice that fine art of doing nothing, alas for now I have too much to do and so little time.
