Our clinical team just keeps growing. A big welcome to Dr. Sarah Burens, OD, MS and Dr. Nancy Bui, both of whom joined ReFocus Waterbury over the past few months. These two talented medical #optometrists have made a fantastic contribution to our interdisciplinary and multi-specialty #eyecare team. Dr. Nancy A. Bui received her #optometry degree from MCPHS University, where she received extensive training in refractive conditions, glasses and contact lenses, ocular diseases, and co-management of patients. Her clinical experiences include working in private practices, the Northampton VA Medical Center, and community health centers in Massachusetts. Outside the clinic, Dr. Bui enjoys reading and spending quality time with her family and friends. She is fluent in English and Vietnamese. Dr. Burens, originally from Cleveland, OH, earned her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience at The Ohio State University, graduating with magna cum laude honors. She then went on to complete a dual degree program at Ohio State, earning both her Master of Science in Vision Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees with the highest honors, summa cum laude. During her optometric training, she received several awards recognizing her accomplishments in research, clinic, and academics, including earning the top national board score. Dr. Burens has extensive training in surgical co-management (including #cataract, #LASIK, and #PRK) at Davis Eye Center in Cleveland, OH. She completed her ocular disease training at the White River Junction VA Center in Vermont and manages several diseases, including diabetes, glaucoma, and age-related #maculardegeneration. She is particularly interested in ocular surface disease and takes a holistic approach to managing #dryeye. At Ohio State, she held various leadership roles in organizations such as Ocular Disease, Lions Club, Low Vision Rehabilitation, AOSA, and SVOSH. She was also a Beta Kappa Sigma Honor Society and American #Optometric Association Leadership Society member, earning Student Fellow distinction through the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Burens is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Connecticut Association of Optometrists, and the Norwalk Lions Club. In her free time, she enjoys traveling and hiking outdoors.

?????? NEW PUBLICATION ALERT ?????? Have a look at this new review paper on the current identification strategies and future perspectives for the assessment of lid wiper epitheliopathy (LWE), co-authored by CORE clinical scientist Daddi Fadel in collaboration with researchers from the School of Optometry at GD Goenka University and the Universidade do Minho. They analyzed 67 studies to get a better understanding of LWE's diagnostic criteria, to uncover challenges in current grading systems and to discuss the need for more objective assessment methods. Key insights: ? LWE can be linked to tear film abnormalities and eyelid margin issues, complicating diagnosis. ? There’s a pressing need for standardized, sensitive diagnostic tools to improve patient outcomes. Not enough words to describe how deeply I understand this experience, down to my own appendix being minutes away from rupture after 9 hours in the ER, pleading for someone to just listen to me, nearly 15 years ago. What’s so disheartening is how little has changed. We need to train health care practitioners to listen first and leave their judgements at the door. I have conducted so many healthcare disparities studies where physicians have openly told me they make judgements about their patients as human beings before they make clinical decisions. Let’s start with, we are ALL human and quality healthcare should be a right and not a privilege. Who is ready to stop commenting on it and start doing something about it like this brave physician? #healthcaredisparities #patientcentric #health #marketresearch #pharmaceuticals
Uché Blackstock, MD was a medical student at Harvard University when her appendicitis burst, requiring emergency surgery. She hadn’t missed her own symptoms. She went to emergency rooms twice seeking help only to be told she had a stomach bug – and to go home. ? Her experience trying to get medical care as a young Black woman reminds me of the countless encounters I witnessed in my training days at Yale Medical School and Mass General, where people in acute pain crises from #SickleCellDisease were treated with callous indifference and disdain. Many of Uché’s experiences hit close to home, and I had a “driveway moment” as I listened to her interview on NPR’s Fresh Air earlier this year as she discussed her life, work, and new book, “Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons With Racism In Medicine.” ? Listen to the full interview or read the highlights here:

It's very interesting to learn that Optometry Australia has established an 'Advanced Practice Recognition' program to recognise and credential #optometrists with demonstrated expertise in certain clinical areas. Starting with #glaucoma management, I can see this being a particularly valuable tool independents differentiating through advanced clinical services. https://lnkd.in/gAdd6iiq

Proud of the excellent work by our Satyan Lakshminrusimha for his incisive look at funds flow from a chair’s perspective. His findings have helped to inform our own administration and others around the nation about what works and what doesn’t. Some context (and more details below in the journal article): UC Davis Health implemented an aligned funds flow model in July 2021 to create a mission-aligned model in which all departments had financial margins to optimize recruitment, retention, research, and teaching. Results: Total collections for departments increased by 4% in the first year, 0.2% in the second year, and 11.3% in the third year of funds flow. Total productivity increased by 4.9% during the first year, 3.6% during the second year, and 8.4% during the third year.?

Satyan Lakshminrusimha-- thanks for the post and work you are doing in this area. Can all missions of an academic medical center align? ....In this era of diminishing cash flows as costs increase and traditional revenue streams decrease? Can clinical care, education, research, and healthcare administration/operations truly align for common missions and funds flow sustainability? You even highlight that this model may not be sustainable at UC Davis; "the implementation of funds flow had a negative fiscal effect on the academic medical center." Thoughts? #UsingWhatWeHaveBetter

A Clinical Research Grant helps ENT surgeons build capacity for research. Applicants are often new to applying for research funding, so we have made the process as simple as possible. We asked Alumni Paul Paddle about his experience in applying for the award. "I honestly thought (rightly or wrongly), that I had a greater chance of success competing against other ENT research projects, as opposed to more general medical research grants," says Paul, on applying for the grant. He makes a good point: overall, the Foundation's Award Round success rate is 27%. Did the grant work as Paul intended? "Yes absolutely," says Paul "It was a good introduction to the rigours of applying for a formal competitive grant, including the logistics of dealing with an administrating institution, working to a budget and timeline." Paul has since gone on to build capacity to undertake further paediatric sleep research, and secured funding with a Conjoint Grant (see our recent posts for details). Find out more about Paul's and other Clinical Research Grant projects on our website. Applications close 5pm AEST on 3rd September 2024. Apply now via our Applications Portal. https://lnkd.in/gXXtKpJ4 #Otolaryngology #OHNS #EarNoseThroat #ENT #Paediatrics #Research #MedicalResearch #ClinicalResearch #ResearchTranslation #SleepResearch #OSA #Sleep #RuralHealth #RegionalHealth #Oximetry
