Do you use KPI's in your business to drive value ? On my journey we went from a startup with 0 KPI's to a dysfunctional growing business with 48 KPI's, back to a high performing business with 2 KPI's This is my journey As our number of KPI's grew to 48: ? Managers were busy managing the KPI's ? All staff had their targets linked to their KPI's ? Too many meetings every week focussed on the KPI's ? Multiple debates around the data behind the KPI's ? We lost complete sight of our "reason for existing" The business became completely corporate and full of ??. At the same time our staff survey indicated a marked year on year deterioration of our team engagement and satisfaction. I got to a point where I didn't even enjoy working in the business ?? So we did a complete reset and walked away from all of the KPI's except for two. What do you think were the two KPI's we kept? As part of the reset we: ? Removed the KPI expert managers ? Promoted experienced deputies to management ? Empowered these managers ? Reestablished what our "reason for existing was" ? Simplified everything What happened Our business took of, it very quickly transformed, our team were more engaged, customers were happier, sales increased, profits increased. So if you have multiple KPI's in your business I argue that you might be better off with a drastic reduction in KPI's. In my experience, an effective business strategy is also an alignment of stars—an alignment of your mission, vision, and operational capabilities: - Your mission is your WHY. If this isn't clear, no strategy will feel right. - Your vision is your WHAT. It is the picture of success on the horizon. - Operational capabilities are your HOW.
