Our recent November PD session with Steve Barrett on pastoral care was both impactful and reflective. It challenged me to rethink my role not just as a teacher, but as a steady, positive force in my students’ lives. The session began with us recalling influential adults in our lives, which helped me reconnect with the power of a supportive presence. It then led us to consider one focus student—someone who could benefit from a deeper, more intentional connection. This exercise highlighted my potential to create a meaningful impact through authentic care and empathy. An excerpt from "The Invisible Classroom by Kirke Olson" hit home, emphasizing that human brains learn best in the context of loving relationships. This perspective reminded me how crucial it is for students to feel safe, seen, and valued. The questions we reflected on drove me to think about how I can make each student feel essential in our class: a) That they are loved and cared for, b) That they are appreciated, c) That each of them matters deeply to our classroom community, and d) That they mean more to me than the content I’m teaching. To make these ideas tangible, I came away with three simple but powerful strategies to bring into my teaching practice: 1. Morning Greetings: Meeting each student at the door with a positive welcome to show that they’re valued from the start of each day. 2. Empathy in Behavior: Recognizing student behavior as communication, not taking it personally, and responding with understanding. 3. Intentional Check-Ins: Making time to connect personally with every student within a few weeks, whether it’s asking about their family, noticing if they’re feeling down, or cheering on their latest interests. Lastly, "Priya Parker’s The Art of Gathering" reinforced the importance of intentionality in our interactions. The way we gather and engage with students can shape how they see their role in the classroom. As teachers, we model the values we want to instill; students observe our actions closely. This PD reminded me that by making each student feel valued beyond academics, I create a learning environment where they are willing to engage and thrive. It reaffirmed that my role is as much about human connection as it is about teaching. Thank you, Steve, and thanks to our school, Chatsworth, for organizing this valuable PD workshop that deepened our understanding of pastoral care and its impact on our students’ lives. #stevebarrett #chatsworthinternationalschool #education #pastoralcare #internationalschool
We had a fantastic 2-day workshop on pastoral care and advisory programme building with Steve Barrett from Wildwood School in LA this weekend. Steve flew over and will be flying back tomorrow. As my father would have said, Steve helped us to ‘whet our whistle’ on all things pastoral and being intentionally student-centered. Chatsworth has been awarded Gold as the top community school two years in a row and we are short-listed for the award again this year but there is always more to do. Fantastic weekend. Exhausting but what a wonderful way to spend a couple of days - discussing opportunities to help all students in our school with colleagues. Thank you, Steve, and thank you to our staff.

I spy with my little eye something familiar in this picture- front and center! I love seeing my book, Support and Retain Educators of Color, used in the context of pushing forward institutional change. I wrote this book not as a cute intellectual exercise but a how-to guide for education and organizational leaders to cultivate workplaces that affirm and retain educators of color. This Friday, I will be presenting insights from my book surrounding affinity group implementation at Center for Black Educator Development Black Men in Education Convening. See you there? #education #equity #BlackMenInEducationConvening #BMEC2024 #Blackteachersmatter

Us: Why do you like TVM? Scholars: Because there’s no boringness! In TVM, Mahea Gaskins has all the scholars say “We are allergic to boring!” Our method of family #engagement attracts parents to be involved in their child’s learning experience. This creates the bridge to then engage families in the #school and #community. That’s the goal! Research has proven that when parents are more active and engaged with their child’s academic journey…the behavior, attendance and grades improve as well. This is just one of the differences that partnering with a full-service community building organization provides.
The Village Method (TVM) is a strategic partner for school districts, designing sustainable, holistic educational solutions. Through programs like ScholarPrep Nation, ASHE, and First Teachers Collaborative, TVM offers end-to-end service from strategic planning to implementation, significantly reducing administrative burdens for our partners. This is a Win, Win, Win! The community, school and (most importantly) the children all WIN with our Community Builders Initiative. Let’s do it again!

The Venn diagram of town relationships One beautiful day in 2008: Alex, Anhad, Ben, Rod, and Kyuho walked into Fiske Kindergarten. Soon followed by Alex, Varun, friends and many of their younger siblings.? So why am I telling this story? The children are now in college, the boys readying to graduate. Because the story is about the parents. Over the 13 years of a Lexington Public School education they have become friends, cared for each others’ children, led school fundraisers or teacher breakfasts, cheered on each other, run half marathons, and had many meals together. So what does a public school system do? In Lexington it does a lot more than just graduate its students. It provides the framework for relationships that grow into roots which anchor a community. We are repositories of town history as experienced by ordinary residents. Our relationships are the launching pad for the children. Remember The Great Redistricting Debate of 2018? Some of our elementary students were transferred from their original school to another. At that time our elementary schools were overcrowded.?A new Hastings School had been built. It was a very public and painful process. Parents, grandparents and?caregivers?spoke about how redistricting would be unfortunate. Stronger language was used too. I fully empathized with the parent community as these bonds of friendship were tight, not only amongst the children, but even more importantly amongst the adults. (I heard the same yearning from every corner of Lexington, so was reassured. Our schools were doing something right!) Luckily the moves were completed in time for the greater space needs in 2020. If Lexington could be a Venn diagram, parents of Alex, Alex, Anhad, Ben, Kyuho, Rod, Varun and friends form one small circle amongst many similar overlapping circles. Lets try to include our Boston families too, until the Venn diagram includes all ages, abilities, genders, races and religions. Enjoy the time with family and friends in peace and contentment. Happy holidays! I've been fortunate to visit 32 Independent schools across NSW in 2024, experiencing firsthand the dedication of staff and school leaders, as well as the incredible diversity of our school communities. ? Preliminary data suggests that 2024 has been another year of notable enrolment growth in NSW Independent schools. While the official data won’t be released until February 2025, early estimates indicate enrolments in NSW Independent schools have risen by at least 8,000 students for the second consecutive year, bringing the total to around 245,000. This increase means that since 2000, Independent schools have enrolled over 60 per cent of all new students in NSW. Much of this growth has occurred in low- to mid-fee Independent schools in Sydney’s expanding outer suburbs and regional centres, and reflects the diverse backgrounds of families choosing Independent schools for their children. On behalf of AISNSW, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the education of the 1.25 million NSW students enrolled in all three school sectors, especially teachers, support and operational staff, principals and those who work hard to ensure schools and students flourish.?As we approach a Federal election year, my hope is that the education conversation remains constructive and focused on students’ needs in all school sectors.
As we approach the end of another year, we'd like to take a moment to express our gratitude for the vibrant and diverse Independent school communities we are privileged to serve. Whether you're spending time with loved ones, looking back on the year's accomplishments, or simply finding a quiet moment to unwind, we wish you peace, joy, and renewal.

“In terms of social equity, unemployed job seekers without a driver’s license are in a disadvantage in reaching sufficient job opportunities, an effect that is enhanced by the dispersed land-use patterns.” (Case study on transportation shared in comments) I can’t say enough positive words about the work of Baltimore City Public Schools in helping students access a driver’s license. This is just one of many examples of the district working to ensure graduates are career ready. While a driver’s license doesn’t readily come to mind when workforce and education professionals talk about industry-recognized credentials, it arguably the most commonly listed job requirements regardless of industry.
Edmondson-Westside students packed the school library to take their MVA permit tests. According to the on-site MVA instructor- Edmondson-Westside leads City Schools with the highest number of students to pass the test! Shout out to Ms. Hutton, Career Coach and Ms. Armwood, Community Schools Coordinator, for their roles in the Driving School partnership.
