If you came to the US in F-1 visa status with a plan to get a Master’s in Data Science and work from home and get a nice high paying job and H-1B sponsorship, maybe that will still work but that feels a bit 2019. 2019 was 5 years ago! If you are still in F-1 status, there is no shame in going back to school (new I-20) and building your profile for what is in demand now. For those not born in India or PR China, getting a PhD gives you time to build a profile to self-petition for a green card. The slump in IT and finance mentioned below will probably continue and remember there are lots of talented people already out there actively looking for jobs after big waves of layoffs the last 2 years. But there are lots of emerging areas- -- The US has made a huge investment in infrastructure and reshoring manufacturing. Combining technology/software development with manufacturing engineering is a powerful combination. -- Some of that money from government stimulus is only now coming online. -- Ag/food production and healthcare are often overlooked. Is Switching to a B1/B2 Visa After H-1B Layoffs a Viable Option? With layoffs happening everywhere, the 60-day grace period for H-1B visa holders can be a stressful time. During this period, you typically need to find a new job or change your immigration status. If you fail to do so, you must leave the country. A B1/B2 tourist visa may be an optimal choice for you. It allows you to stay in the US for up to 6 months. With a B1/B2 visa, you can maintain legal status in the US without leaving, search for jobs, and attend interviews, giving you extra time for your job search. Are you worried about transitioning back to H-1B from B1/B2? According to USCIS, if your change of status application to B1/B2 (Form I-539) is pending and your new employer files an H-1B petition (Form I-129) with premium processing, both petitions may be adjudicated concurrently under the premium processing timeframe and provide decisions simultaneously. USCIS prioritizes Form I-539, allowing you to maintain legal status in the US. If your H-1B petition (Form I-129) is approved, you will regain H-1B status and can even start working, regardless of the I-539 decision. Thus, you may not need consular processing to regain your non-immigrant status. Can LinkedIn help me? My favorite H-1B database refreshed its website, but in doing so removed its most useful report -- the top US visa sponsors by Career. (That report listed the top 100 employers sponsoring marketing- or operations-specific roles, for example.) Many H-1B database websites will 1) return individual visas sponsored by job title keyword (in no particular order and not totaled up by employer) and 2) list top employer sponsors by sector/industry, specific job title, or a very small set of occupations. However, that original report was very helpful for internationals students seeking US roles, especially outside of product management / consulting / banking. Does anyone have an alternative? (FYI: Myvisajobs, h1bgrader, and redbus2us don't seem to. Do GoinGlobal or Interstride, for those of you who have access? I think both have H-1B visa databases, but I don't think either list the top 100 employers sponsoring H-1Bs for marketing jobs, for example) The US government does provide raw data for download, but that's a big data set for individuals to manipulate! I'd love to find something more user-friendly.
