How should we handle multilingual comments on TIPPUNKT? A new feature coming soon to TIPPUNKT! To foster a more engaged community, we're introducing a comment section under articles. However, to ensure quality and relevance, commenting will be exclusive to registered members. As you know, TIPPUNKT is available in German, English, and Croatian language. Therefore, each article is written in those three languages. And now we're faced with a decision: Option 1: Unified Comments All comments, regardless of language, will be visible under each article, creating a global discussion. Option 2: Language-Specific Comments Comments will be categorized by language, allowing for more focused discussions within each linguistic community. Share your thoughts by the end of this month and help us make the best decision for our community!

Sicilian is officially a language on Google Translate! Some of you might know that in my free time I volunteer as a language activist - I’m the president of the American branch of Cademia Siciliana, an organization dedicated to the promotion, standardization, and recognition of the Sicilian language. This is a language that my grandfather spoke, and a language I’m raising my son in. One of our members, Gino Miceli, informed us that Google was interested in launching Sicilian as one of the languages in its latest update of the translation tool and he put together a plan to make sure that the final product was something that Sicilians would respond positively to. I then managed Cademia’s translation team to make sure that we were able to produce and review the content Google needed in time to fine tune the final product. And the results are something we’re all very excited about! Being on Google Translate is a major milestone for any language, and if we’re going to maintain the world’s rich linguistic heritage, we need to provide the tools and contexts for all languages to thrive. Thanks to everyone that helped make this a reality. For this week’s #CEATLFriday we take a little trip back to Reykjavík with an article from #Counterpoint about Icelandic?Bandalag tyeenda og túlka, or?Btot?for short. Thanks a lot for a wonderful AGM and taking the delegates on the Golden Circle Tour! In English known as The Icelandic Association of Translators and Interpreters, BTHOT wanted to create an umbrella organisation for translators of all kinds, both literary and technical. Amongst other things, BTHOT provides a means to exercise collective influence on editors, companies, and the government about every issue in their field. And they have been going strong ever since 2004! BTHOT provides a platform for the so-called ‘invisible translator’. They organize several activities every year, and the highlights include the annual presentation of the Translation Awards for the best-translated literary fiction and the Icepick Award for the best-translated crime story. Times may change, but focal issues remain the same. Where BTHOT in the early 2000s fought for better wages for audio-visual translators, they now voice their concerns about the potential negative impact of AI. "The need for immediate communication in a world characterized by an ever-increasing flow of information has led to a rapid increase in volunteer translation in recent decades. While previous studies have focused on aspects such as volunteer translators’ motivation and the attendant ethical issues of voluntary translation, comparatively little research has explored the phenomenon from a discursive perspective. The research reported in this article explored the discursive construction of the volunteer translator in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) active in Spain using critical discourse analysis. Drawn from analysis of 25 semi-structured individual interviews with volunteer translators in five different NGOs, the findings reveal that volunteer translators are seen either as an agent and actor of social change who facilitates communication and possesses a strong sense of identity and social status, or as someone who is interfering in a sector traditionally limited to professional translators and who consequently has a weaker sense of identity and social status. This suggests that the role of the volunteer translator currently lacks definition, and that further research is needed to better understand the relationship between volunteer and professional translators in the 21st century." #metaglossia_mundus: https://lnkd.in/e5GTktim ?
