????Feel Good Friday Blood Donor Awareness Month--Blizzard and the Boys???? Blizzard, this absolute beauty queen of a Great Dane has been a blood donor for four years. She is far from alone at home in her life-saving endeavors; blood donors run in her family. Her feline brothers, Vinnie, the domestic short hair, and Lorenzo, the Maine Coon, are both donors. Vinnie has been donating for an impressive 8 years, and Lorenzo, adopted 4 years ago, has been a donor ever since. These three life savers usually travel together to the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital to visit our team at the Wyatt Goldthwaite Veterinary Blood Bank, making donating a family affair. The staff loves walking by the blood bank's windowed doors and seeing Blizz's big head sticking up, while Lorenzo lounges out on a chair, not a care in the world, and Vinny enjoys his Churro, having completed his donation. This trio's mom, Andrea, knows the importance of canine and feline blood donations more so than most. She worked for years on the front lines as a triage nurse in the veterinary field, and witnessed many instances when blood product saved a pet's life. To have her furry family members be a part of the life saving process just made sense--like mother, like kids. ???? Think your cat or dog(or both) may make a great blood donor? Want to learn more about this exciting program and the incentives that come with donating? Email Jessie and Bri at bloodbank@rbvh.net, and start your pets on their journey to becoming life saving blood donors. ??

?? THE EMERGENCY FUND ?? helped a Minnesota kitty recently with his urgent veterinary care. Squeaker was in pain; he was panting and pacing for 6 hours; he was very sick. Squeaker was going in and out of the litter box often but producing little urine. His elderly mom suspected a urinary tract infection and rushed him to a low-cost veterinary clinic. Squeaker’s mom paid for an exam and urinalysis which confirmed that Squeaker had a UTI. He was prescribed antibiotics and pain medication however his mom had depleted what money she had and could not afford any further treatment for Squeaker. Heartbroken, she took Squeaker home empty-handed. Luckily, her neighbor had heard about us and helped Squeaker’s mom apply for financial assistance. ?? The Emergency Fund helped with the cost of Squeaker’s medication; without it, Squeaker’s condition could have deteriorated rapidly and become life-threatening if he developed a urinary blockage. ?? The Emergency Fund steps in when a pet parent is having a difficult time and needs a few hundred dollars to get their furbaby the medication they need to live long and healthy lives. The Emergency Fund is vital to our mission. Please consider donating to the Emergency Fund today to help more pets in 2024. Your contribution will make all the difference in giving these furry friends the care they deserve. Last month, the Emergency Fund ?? helped a little 4-month-old Iowa kitten named Lucy who had diarrhea and a swollen and enlarged rectum. The diarrhea was so severe that it had scorched off the fur and skin from Lucy’s tail and back legs. Lucy’s mom took her to a low-cost veterinary clinic and sent her home with oral antibiotics and probiotics. The veterinarian instructed her mom to bathe Lucy, apply Desitin ointment to her rear, and keep a cone on her to prevent over-grooming and further irritation. However, after a week, Lucy’s condition did not improve, and she was getting sicker. Once a playful kitten, Lucy had become very weak and was barely eating. ?? Lucy’s mom works as a cashier and lives paycheck to paycheck. She was in between pay cycles and did not have any money to take Lucy back for another veterinary appointment. We helped with the cost, and Lucy was given subcutaneous fluids for dehydration and a stronger antibiotic. Her stool was tested for parasites, she was dewormed, and she was given an intestinal prescription diet food. Today, Lucy is happy, healthy, and back to her usual kitten self, zooming around and causing all kinds of kitten mischief. Her mom said, “Her appetite has come back full force, and she has new skin coming in on her tail and bum. I can’t even begin to thank you enough!” ?? Not every emergency case we take on costs thousands of dollars; sometimes, the medical care needed is a few hundred dollars. By becoming a monthly donor angel, your donation will help pets like Lucy, who just need a little more help to get better. Even a $5.00 or $10.00 monthly donation will make a difference in the lives of pets in need. In 2018, our organization was founded with the belief that every cat deserves to live with dignity. Over the last nearly seven years, more than 3,000 cats have been helped because of your support. But the truth is, we’re facing real struggles. Like many small rescues, we’re stretched thin. With rising costs for food, veterinary care, medications, and essential supplies, every day brings new requests to help cats in urgent situations. That’s why we are setting an ambitious goal. We’re looking for 50 new monthly donors to join us in making a difference for cats in Rhode Island. Whether you can give $15, $25, or more, every donation is a steady, reliable way for us to continue our life-changing work. ?? $15 – Microchips one cat, keeping them safe ?? $25 – Provides one month worth of food for one cat ?? $50 – Vaccinates one cat ?? $100 – Spays/neuters one cat Our goal is big, but with you on our side, we believe it’s possible. The Emergency Fund recently helped a young cat in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. ?? Prescott is just two years old and still a very playful kitten. Due to his energetic behavior and a severe case of kitten “Zoomies,” Prescott fell off a high cabinet and injured his back leg severely. ?? His dad rushed him to the veterinary clinic and x-rays showed he had suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula bones. The veterinarian recommended amputating Prescott’s leg immediately, however, his dad could not afford the surgery cost. Prescott’s leg was placed in a splint to prevent further damage and he was sent home with pain medication. Prescott's dad turned to family and friends, seeking financial aid to cover the surgery cost. Despite these efforts, an additional $850 was required to proceed with the life-changing operation. Desperate, Prescott’s dad contacted us. He said, “Prescott is in so much pain right now, even with the pain medicine, and cannot use the bathroom, eat, or drink on his own.” ?? Due to the urgency, we used funds from the Emergency Fund to get Prescott into surgery ASAP! Prescott had amputation surgery on May 2nd. Prescott has done remarkably well post-op, adjusting to life with just 3 legs; his incision area has completely healed and he no longer needs his cone. Prescott's story serves as a testament to the unwavering dedication of pet owners and the crucial role that The Emergency Fund plays in providing timely assistance to animals in need. DONATE YOUR PACEMAKER ?Did you know that if you have a pacemaker, you can include it in your Will to be donated to a dog in need after you pass away? Be sure to tell your family so it can be taken right away to a veterinary clinic. Although pacemakers cannot be used for another human, they can help dogs with heart problems and potentially save their lives. You can arrange for the pacemaker to be sent to a vet of your choice. Many pacemakers are simply thrown away, and dogs may die because people do not know about this option. Donating the pacemaker can even save the dog's owner the cost of a new one, which can sometimes make a crucial difference in affording life-saving treatment.

THE EMERGENCY FUND plays a crucial role in providing a safety net for pets needing urgent and life-saving veterinary care. Throughout the year, the Emergency fund has been instrumental in ensuring that pets like Gizmo, Tommy, Loki, Prescott, Nala, Charlie the dog, Samson, and Sergio received the medical care they desperately needed. Their urgent veterinary care was 100% funded by the Emergency Fund. ?? It is heartwarming to witness the impact of the Emergency Fund on the lives of these beloved pets and the families that love them. The Emergency Fund steps in during times of crisis but also helps when we fall short on our fundraising efforts for pets like Hawi, Crook, and Mitzi and pets like Umusa & Loki who need additional treatment or medications to control their medical conditions. The Emergency Fund also steps in to help with end-of-life care for pets like Little Bitty and Magick. No pet should have to suffer until the end because their family can not afford the cost. ?? The Emergency Fund also helps Miko, Kilo, Khaleesi, and Max with their prescription food to manage their ongoing medical conditions, when we have exhausted the funds in the Feed A Rescue Pet Fund. As we approach the middle of the year, there is a pressing need to replenish the Emergency Fund to ensure that it remains a valuable resource for pet parents in distress. Your support and contributions are vital in sustaining this lifeline for pets in need. Please join us in our mission to save lives and provide a second chance to beloved pets in crisis. PLEASE HELP SAVE SNOWBABY'S LIFE! ?? This sweet boy was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism; he has lost a lot of weight and muscle mass, and he's just not doing well. However, Snowbaby is one of the rare cats who experiences bad side effects from the daily medication that is usually used to treat this. The only course of treatment is radioactive iodine therapy (I-131). Unfortunately, this type of treatment requires handling radioactive drugs, so it's only available at certain veterinary hospitals. The closest clinic that can treat Snowbaby is 3 hours away in Maryland. The cost of this life-saving treatment is very expensive. The estimate is between $3,066.47- 3,643.58. Snowbaby's mom is very low-income and receives disability benefits. She can't afford this on her own, and without the treatment, Snowbaby will die. I know times are tough, but please, please consider donating whatever you can to help this sweet boy. No amount is too small! ?? This Movember, New Era Veterinary Hospital is joining forces with Mind Jersey to raise awareness for men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health. Mind Jersey is an independent charity dedicated to helping individuals living with mental illness, providing crucial resources, and working towards a society that values and protects mental well-being for all. As a veterinary professional, I know firsthand how mental health challenges can deeply impact our field. Shockingly, UK veterinary surgeons are three to four times more likely to die by suicide compared to the general population (Platt et al., 2010). This statistic is a stark reminder of the mental health crisis within our profession, and the urgent need for support systems that can make a difference. By participating in Movember and supporting Mind Jersey, we’re working towards a future where mental health is prioritised in every industry, including veterinary medicine. Every donation helps provide resources and support for those who need it most. Join us in making a difference: https://lnkd.in/eecFi_XE
