A few months ago I posted that I was writing my memoir with the support of a wonderful new author’s program. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, I thought I would share some insights from my life. My story is about personal power and how it is never too late to get it back. My personal power was taken away as a child by my father and then by my ex-husband, who I married at age 18 and was married to for 34 years. It is also about how self-reliance can only get you so far, and how learning that lasting peace and joy can come only from God above. A survivor of chronic childhood abuse and trauma, my adverse childhood experiences (ACE) score is an 8 out of 10. A person doesn’t just emerge from childhood trauma with no mental health issues. Throughout my professional career, I was plagued with frequent panic attacks and self-doubt. Yet, true to my vows, I leaned in, pressed on and worked ridiculously long hours to create a successful career in spite of these challenges. My professional career began in 1980 and spanned to 2020. For much of that time, it was considered tabu to display any weakness in the workplace, especially as a woman. Genetically, I was blessed with intelligence. In my family of origin, I was taught that I had to “work hard” and to always "get it right" in order to not get hurt. Consequently, I made personal vows when I left home at 17 years old. Some of these vows were good; others were not so much. My vows were: I will never live in poverty again. I will get a college degree. I will do everything I (legally and morally) can to be successful at whatever I do. I will love, provide for and protect my children. I will please my husband. My memoir is almost finished. I am working on my epilogue. Hindsight is as they say “2020”. If I could go back, I would work less and take care of myself more. I am grateful to be able to be doing this now. Meanwhile, I continuously seek ways to let my skills and experiences be a light to those around me and to encourage others who struggle as I continue to grow in love, joy, peace, patience, goodness and faithfulness… these are my vows now. My goal is to be a beacon of hope for those who feel powerless and to help others the best that I can. I will let you know when I am about to launch my book. I expect this to be early 2025. In closing, always remember that many people are struggling with issues we know nothing about. If you are going to be anything, be kind.

If creative people have a superpower, it's empathy. And the simplest way I know of exercising empathy is to read. So, the rise of bibliotherapy—"the art of giving the right book at the right time to the right person"—feels like the perfect confluence of several trends. The booming self-help industry. Social media fuelling self-diagnosis. The prevalence of therapy-speak. The idea that a book can change how you feel or see the world isn't new. We've all shared books with friends we think would enjoy them. But the prescription of books feels like something new. Paying to be told what they should read seems akin to being told how to feel. Another content recommendation algorithm for a world that's already drowning in content. Taking a chance on a book without knowing where it will transport you or how it might change you is where the joy and the value are found. It's how you discover your creative superpower.

Introducing CATHARSIS Nashville! Among the sources of suffering I encounter most frequently, as a psychotherapist and a human being, are the twin epidemics of mental health "disorders" and loneliness. There is a widespread need for high-quality, long-term, holistic mental health treatment--especially for HSPs (Highly Sensitive Persons), who are 15-20% of the general population but estimated to be some 50% of therapy clients. Yet, due to the inequities of the U.S. healthcare system, patients who aren't rich can't afford long-term therapy, and therapists who aren't rich are unable to offer it affordably. For patients experiencing psychosis, hospitalization can be even more traumatizing than the "illness" itself, and is often ineffective for lasting healing. Moreover, mental health is not just a matter of individual genetics (though this does play a role)--"disorders" such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis are inextricable from a disordered society, economy, and culture where increasing isolation, digitalization, and division contribute to widespread distress. Enter CATHARSIS.… CATHARSIS Nashville will be an endowment-based, nonprofit, holistic healing center and café offering psychotherapy, medication management, bodywork, multifaith chapel, soundproof music and art room, and garden--all on a "pay as you can" basis. Two of the most powerful healing ingredients, especially for HSPs, are 1) dedicated, peaceful healing space and 2) long-term positive relationships with their therapists. CATHARSIS will provide both. Our name is an acronym for our mission statement: Clients And Therapist-Healers Activating Relational Synergy In Sanctuary. First, we will raise money for an endowment to secure long-term solvency and accessibility regardless of clients' ability to pay. Second, we will buy property and build (or remodel) the center. Then, we will hire a treatment team of therapists who are HSPs themselves and begin offering services. Our annual fundraiser will be a musical theatre production in which clients, therapists, and community members can all participate. If this vision excites and resonates with you, we would love for you to join us in bringing it into being! Please subscribe to our Substack for weekly posts to learn more, and thank you for joining the CATHARSIS Nashville community! https://lnkd.in/eBecwScb
