MCKINNEY’S MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR MUSIC VENUE: A nearly quarter-billion-dollar music venue is coming to one of Dallas’ premier suburbs. McKinney is building the 20,000-seat Sunset Amphitheater just northeast of the 75/121 exchange! It’s going to have 250 luxury fire pit suites, custom-built suites, and a landscaped grass berm. It’s even going to incorporate technology to warm up outdoor concerts in the cooler months. The Colorado-based developer says they expect the venue to host 50 to 55 shows a year. Let’s do some math real fast. 50 to 55 shows a year times 20,000+ tickets… and that’s not counting the money to be made off of concessions and merchandise inside the amphitheater. It’s not outrageous to predict that this construction could have a MULTIBILLION-dollar impact on McKinney’s (and the surrounding areas’) economy. Construction is expected to begin this year and the theater will open in 2026. And on top of that, let’s imagine for a second the people who are going to be coming into town to build this behemoth of a project. Where do you imagine they’ll be living? Our money is affordable (for now!) homes to the north in Grayson County. This is just another piece of evidence that you need to INVEST NOW in Grayson County. Live Nation Entertainment has hailed 2023 as its “biggest year ever” for live music in its financial results. Its concert attendance was up 20% year-on-year as more than 145 million fans attended over 50k events. That pushed the company’s annual revenues up 36% to $22.7bn, and an operating profit of $1.07bn. “The live music industry reached new heights in 2023, and demand for live music continues to build. Our digital world empowers artists to develop global followings, while inspiring fans to crave in-person experiences more than ever,” was how president and CEO Michael Rapino summarised the trends. The results also shone a spotlight on Live Nation’s ‘show pipeline’ for large venues (that’s stadiums, arenas and amphitheatres) saying that it has 65% of the full year booked, compared to around 50% this time last year. A few months ago, we discussed the future of music festivals being more small and mid-sized rather than large scale mega festivals. As festival season begins, it seems like the trends are showing a few factors. 1) Fans are being priced out due to increased ticket prices and travel costs. 2) They are also getting fatigued from festivals pushing to go 4-5 days even in some cases, and being split up between multiple festivals with very similar lineups. 3) Additionally, potential headliners are limited and opting to do their own headline tours and shows. Whatever the cause, the small/niche events that appeal to very specific audiences are seeming like the move for the future.
