Dare I say it, a little wave of pride came over me today. I very rarely post about our products, as there’s plenty of people already fully engaged in promoting what we do, and I feel my time is much better spent on reducing our impacts instead. Sometimes though, it’s probably healthy to take a step back & appreciate just what your team has achieved. It occurred to me that EV charging habits are similar to the way bumblebees collect nectar. ?? Rather than thinking, "How much time do I need until I'm fully charged?" I think, "How much time do I have and what are the charging options available to me here and now?" Just like bumblebees maximize their nectar collection, EV owners make the most out of every charging opportunity. The breadth of the sustainable product development market feels, at least partly and in principle, geared towards cost REDUCTION. Albeit long term cost reduction in most cases, particularly for end-users - e.g. that's why we as consumers are told the energy transition will bring the advent of cheap, clean energy for all. So, where does a luxury product fit in this wider narrative? Earlier this year I had the pleasure of visiting Taras Kravtchouk, a designer, artist and engineer who's electric motorcycle brand has become a major talking point in the #NewYork product design community. Taras explained that, instead of being a stint at commoditising sustainable products and electrification, the Tarform bike's left field positioning as a luxury lifestyle item comes from an ambition to get people talking. To get people asking QUESTIONS. Questions about the implications of unconventional, sustainable approaches to product design, with the hope that fostering the conversation with consumers will fuel demand that challenges producers & manufacturers to put their own money where their mouth is. I remember my dad spending weeks hunched in front of a TV screen in our playroom, lights off, curtains drawn, poring over VHS video recordings of sonar-buoy tests conducted at sea. He was determined to ensure the systems his department was buying were going to perform as required. We chatted this morning about this shared memory because of this video by Clean Sea Solutions. With the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, people building complex systems demonstrate performance against specification. 3DEXCITE's contribution is is not only useful for demonstrating capabilities to customers in a trustful and intelligible fashion, but it turns out that accurate visual mock-ups of complex systems are also useful for accelerating robotic automation: from object recognition to autonomous command and control.
