Aluminum Association cheers for less landfill, more economy; American Beverage is all in for circling back bottles to bottles; and even the Plastic Makers are throwing their support behind keeping our circular economy rolling. ?? With everyone from forest defenders to tech innovators on board, it's like the whole spectrum decided to “recycle” their differences for once. Recycling alone will never solve the plastic pollution crisis, but it is vital to building a zero-waste future. A fundamental tenet to improving recycling is truth in labeling, ensuring products are clearly and transparently labeled compostable, recyclable, or destined for landfills. Thus, we were thrilled to see Minnesota successfully fight misleading recycling labeling on plastic trash bags. Most of the state's residential recycling programs do not accept plastic bags. New York's EPR for packaging bill came close to passing but didn't make it this session. We are in an era where... ...sustainability is no longer just a goal, but a necessity. Here's why it matters: 1) This bill aimed to revolutionize recycling infrastructure and reduce harmful chemicals in packaging. 2) It proposed ambitious recycled content requirements and plastic reduction thresholds. Despite not passing, the bill highlighted key issues: 1) Economic Benefits: New York City estimated $150 million in annual waste management savings. 2) Environmental Progress: Significant reduction in waste and enhanced recycling infrastructure. The conversation doesn't end here. We must continue to advocate for policies that drive sustainability in packaging. The support is growing, and with more engagement and discussion, we can make these initiatives a reality. SB 343 was passed by the California Legislature and signed into law by Governor Newsom in 2021, and it was intended to limit deceptive or misleading claims about the recyclability of products and packaging. It sought to do so by limiting claims of recyclability—including use of the well-known chasing arrows symbol—to products and packaging that meet certain criteria. Generally, the criteria are that the material is of a type collected by jurisdictions serving at least 60% of California and is sorted into defined waste streams for recycling facilities serving at least 60% of recycling programs statewide.
