“We really focus on building community power because over the last four years, and really, my whole life. If we don't figure out how to work together, we are not going to be successful. I've been doing entrepreneurial ecosystem building for 10 years, but before that, for 20 years, I worked with young people, I worked with communities, and I did youth development education. What I've seen in my 30 years of work is if you're fragmented, you're weak. We need to figure out how to get fragmented and siloed groups of people to work together as a larger entity. This is the crux of this Summit. How do we get people doing great work connected and pooling resources? How do we advocate for more resources from the federal government, from our state governments, from our local governments? How do we actually work as a group with JP Morgan Chase and get some actual funding that can be systemic and long-term to actually grow small businesses? During this event, we had the privilege of teaching entrepreneurs and basic learners the essential skills needed to navigate the digital space. As 2024 comes to a close, I’m filled with gratitude reflecting on the incredible journey this year has been—not just for me, but for the amazing entrepreneurial tech-ecosystem in Maryland. This year marked a significant milestone in my career as I stepped into the role of Ecosystem Director at TEDCO. It’s been a privilege to visit so many regions across our beautiful state, learning firsthand about the challenges and opportunities facing our communities. Along the way, I had the chance to engage with over 40 inspiring startups, moderate and participate in thought-provoking panels, and share heartfelt conversations with entrepreneurs about their journeys. I’m also deeply thankful for the countless hours my colleagues and I spent brainstorming ways to better support Maryland’s innovators and create more opportunities for them to thrive. The dedication and passion of everyone in this ecosystem continues to inspire me every day. What stands out most is our collective effort. Maryland’s strength lies in its people—the founders who dream big, the mentors and partners who guide them, and the communities that champion their success. Together, we’ve created a place where ideas flourish, and dreams turn into reality. To everyone who welcomed me into their journey this year—thank you. Grassroots Growth Observation #3: Improved communication and welcoming programs are key to fostering an inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem. Entrepreneurs struggle with isolation and a lack of awareness of available resources. There is a call for better communication and coordination between organizations, hosting more ecosystem events, and creating support groups that improve connectivity, access to resources, and a sense of community, particularly for non-biotech sectors and brick-and-mortar businesses.

When we began, we sought the perfect blend of potential and growth. Now, Miami's on its 2nd cohort, driving equity and innovation. We made this move to Miami because our team saw South Florida's Tech industry is 2X more diverse than that of the ENTIRE tech industry across the United States. ? Miami, now on its 2nd cohort, is driving equity and innovation, fueled by the vibrant diversity of South Florida's tech industry. Chicago, DC, and Miami are distinct, each with growing tech sectors and robust entrepreneurial ecosystems. But it's their differences that make them great! In December 2024, the Don Wood Foundation proudly announced a $260,000 grant to support the Small Scale Developer Program through the Summit City Entrepreneur and Enterprise District (SEED)! This initiative equips aspiring local developers with the tools and knowledge needed to reshape Fort Wayne’s housing and redevelopment landscape. From hands-on training to workshops on securing funding and navigating regulations, the program empowers participants to transform vacant properties and strengthen neighborhoods—especially in the southeast quadrant of our city. ?? With this grant, the program will run twice in 2025 and three times in 2026, creating even more opportunities for local talent to build their future while driving community growth.
