How to solve homelessness? Peggy Bailey provided the key federal policies for us to solve homelessness in her testimony before Congress earlier this week. Read her entire remarks (or listen to them on C-SPAN), but I’ve shared her and the team at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities’ nonpartisan research, grounded in evidence and analysis below: ????Maintain the current number of households receiving rental assistance and begin to expand rental assistance to reach all families who need it. This includes utilizing the mandatory side of the budget for rental assistance expansion to ensure that funding adjusts as costs and needs rise and prioritizing expansion to reach all people with the lowest incomes first; ?????? Make larger and streamlined investments that increase supply of affordable housing; ??????Increase investment in fair housing solutions and tenant protections; and ?????Invest to revitalize public housing and other aging affordable housing developments.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to testify before the Senate Budget Committee. It was a unique opportunity to highlight the issues surrounding the affordable housing crisis. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities team did an awesome job pulling everything together. The key point - we must get leaders to understand that people can’t afford housing because they don’t have enough money to pay the rent. Plain and simple. This problem isn’t unique, it has been persistent and requires a permanent solution. We need to stop blaming people and instead help them afford housing so they can have that peace of mind.
