Why Boards Must Embrace the Venture Mindset in Disruptive Times In the June issue (https://lnkd.in/eTM9GekC) of Harvard Business Review, Ilya Strebulaev, a Stanford professor of private equity and finance, argues that large corporations often lack the venture mindset crucial for navigating market changes and disruptive technologies. As someone who has overseen several innovation cycles, from ERP to ebusiness, Internet, Mobile, blockchain, AI, and quantum computing, I couldn't agree more. My Take: ??Risk and uncertainty are inherent in innovation, yet most companies fail to address innovation in their "Management Discussion and Analysis"?of 10-Ks. ??Understanding the risk profile and risk appetite is paramount for boards to effectively co-create strategies and innovative business models. ??I encourage Lead Directors and board committee chairs to adopt a VC mindset in times of uncertainty and disruption by: 1???Fostering debates and forward-thinking perspectives 2???Seeking metrics on both successful and failed experiments 3???Exploring alternative paths and scenarios 4?? Great documentary from the Financial Times, where Sequoia Capital provides insight into how Venture Capital (VC) in Silicon Valley and the digital tech startups have operated—and the consequences that have followed, both good and bad. Cases like FTX and poor bets in the crypto and token markets have shown the risks involved. VC firms, seeing the meteoric rise of Bitcoin and companies like FTX or Luna, jumped in, and we all know how that turned out. The VC world took a hit, prompting investors to rethink their strategies and emphasize due diligence, beyond the rush of VC "agents" and "officials" who were pouring money into ventures without long-term foresight—focusing solely on massive profits instead of building true innovation. European VCs, for example, remain much more skeptical of digital tech compared to their US counterparts. However, we may soon see a leaner, more thoughtful VC landscape, one that genuinely helps startups that currently struggle to break into the VC world due to lack of connections or opportunities through traditional channels. Sequoia could be an example, at least in the US and Silicon Valley, of how VC risk capital might adapt, investing more wisely and realistically in this new digital age. In this era, capital should flow not just into Silicon Valley, but to promising technologies, products, and solutions around the globe—differentiating real innovation from the techno-babble companies offering little substance. While this documentary tries to connect a lot of different elements, its central idea is clear: VC must evolve to remain relevant in today’s rapidly changing world. Do you experience JOMO? We've all heard of FOMO (Fear of missing out), likely have practised it in real life. It encapsulates the anxiety we feel when we think we're missing out on an experience, event, or opportunity – especially when we see others partaking. How many of us take a step back at times and experience "Joy of Missing Out" (JOMO)? Like when you watch people pile into FTX, and questioning your own sanity, only to watch it crash and burn, and feeling the exhilarating sense of JOMO? JOMO refers to the satisfaction and strategic advantage an investor feels when choosing not to chase every trending investment opportunity, instead favoring well-researched, deliberate decisions over reacting to the market's every ebb and flow. Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors of all time, perfectly encapsulates the essence of JOMO in investing. He famously said, “The stock market is a no-called-strike game. You don't have to swing at everything – you can wait for your pitch.” Further highlighting Buffett's JOMO philosophy is a tangible symbol in his office: the "too hard" box. Any company or investment opportunity that doesn't fit within his clear understanding or seems too complex gets placed in this box. It serves as a reminder that it's okay to pass on opportunities that don't align with one's core expertise or understanding, regardless of how attractive they might seem to the broader market.
